What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a black-ink etching on cream-coloured paper, wide in format and surrounded by a pale margin. It shows the empty interior of an old stone building, seen from a slightly low viewpoint. The upper half is dominated by an impressive timber roof structure: thick curved beams form broad arches, crossed by tie-beams and smaller rafters, all drawn with dense, nervous hatching. The walls are rough stone and plaster, scratched by fine vertical and diagonal lines that suggest wear, damp, and uneven surfaces. At the back left, a small window with a grid of panes lets in a restrained light and brightens part of the wall. Below it stand a dark rectangular piece of furniture, perhaps a chest or altar, and a low railing with small balusters. At the centre-right, two round arches on columns open onto a darker space, with steps leading up to it. In the right foreground, a large circular stone font, like a heavy bowl, rests on stacked flat bases. The floor is uneven, covered with shadows, loose boards, stones, and a mound of rubble in the lower-left corner. There are no human figures. Below the image, handwritten inscriptions identify the place and the artist. The whole scene feels still, worn, and silent.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the great curved beams overhead and let your eyes follow their descent toward the small, bright window. Then look down at the rubble-strewn floor and, on the right, at the heavy font: the contrast between the raised roof and the worn ground changes the scene from a simple architectural view into a meditation on time. Notice how the emptiest wall is also the one that receives the most light.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is plate 42 of the Liber Studiorum, a softground etching made in 1838 by John Sell Cotman (1782–1842), a British artist associated with English watercolour and printmaking of the period, and part of a bound volume of 48 plates held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The title identifies the subject as Capel Carrig, in the historic county of Caernarvonshire, in Wales. The interior shown is probably that of a church or chapel in that area, although the source does not name the specific building or explain its state of preservation. In softground etching, the soft ground gives the line a grainy quality close to chalk or pencil.

Curious detailDato curioso

In softground etching, a soft, greasy ground allows textures — and even the pressure of a pencil drawn over paper laid on the plate — to be transferred to the metal, which is why many lines here look drawn rather than incised.

I look at this 1838 soft-ground etching and I am struck by texture. The soft varnish leaves a grainy line, like charcoal, which Cotman uses to separate materials: the dense, nervous hatching of the curved roof beams versus the fine, scratched lines that suggest rough stone and damp plaster. I am interested in the contrast between the cream paper and the black ink, and how the restrained light from the small paned window brightens the back wall. The whole interior breathes wear and stillness.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this empty chapel is an observatory in reverse. Outside is Wales, in Caernarvonshire, but inside everything looks upward: the thick beams forming arches and the crossed ties draw constellations of timber above our heads. The only natural light comes through that small paned window on the left, tiny and restrained, like a distant moon barely brightening the wall. There are no human figures, only silence, stone and shadow. It is an interior sky made for slow contemplation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This church looks like a giant abandoned house and it gives me the shivers but also makes me curious. There is no one, just a round font like a huge bowl, some steps leading to two dark arches and a pile of little stones and boards on the floor. The roof is the coolest part, with curved beams like whale ribs holding everything up. The little window with tiny panes lets in just a bit of light and everything looks scribbly, as if someone drew very fast with a pencil in total silence.
