What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal image with rounded corners shows, in very close foreground, a woman seen from behind and from behind her left shoulder. Her face is not visible. Long, dark hair, rendered with fine, dense strokes, falls down the center of her back and blends into the almost black background on the left. Her back is bare, pale and luminous, and occupies much of the lower half; the grain of the lithographic crayon gives the skin a soft, slightly rough texture. A light garment slips below her right shoulder. On the right, her forearm rises and her fingers grasp a strand of hair or the end of a braid, a gesture suggesting she is combing or arranging it. Beyond her, in a dim interior, there is a table: a marbled rectangular box, a vase with a bouquet of light flowers and large dark leaves, a bright small shape, and a rounded container with claw feet and highlighted reflections. The palette is dominated by deep greens and creamy whites. The light, soft and lateral, models the shoulder blade and arm while leaving the surroundings in shadow. Small bright touches on glass and metal contrast with the overall nocturnal, velvety matte surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the luminous back in the foreground and notice how it guides your eye toward the small hand holding the hair. Then look to the bright patch on the right: the flowers and objects on the table emerge from the darkness. Realizing that the face never appears changes this seemingly ordinary gesture into a scene of guarded privacy.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as *La Chevelure*, made in Paris, France, in 1899 by Jules Léon Flandrin (1871–1947), with printing by Imprimerie Champenois. It is a color lithograph, catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a bound volume in the Prints department, from the bequest of John Bonebrake. In late nineteenth-century France, lithography allowed artists to create grainy tonal effects close to drawing and to circulate intimate images in print. The identity of the model is not known, nor is the exact room depicted; it is probably a private interior staged for the composition.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the title foregrounding the hair, the most luminous and expansive surface is not the hair but the bare back, which occupies nearly half the image.

I pause on the illuminated back and how the grain of the lithographic crayon creates that velvety, matte skin. The dark hair merges with the almost black background on the left, made with fine, dense strokes that must have required delicate control of the stone. I am drawn to the contrasts: the deep greens and creamy whites, and those small highlights on the claw-footed container and on the glass. Printed by Imprimerie Champenois, the print still keeps its tones very well and that enveloping nocturnal atmosphere.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this image as a small indoor night sky. The dark background on the left is like a starless night where the long hair gets lost, and the pale back is like a moon reflecting a soft, sidelong light. To the right, the highlights on the claw-footed container and on the glass are pinpoint sparkles, like planets. The bouquet of pale flowers and the marbled box on the table are domestic constellations. Everything remains in half-light, as if we were looking in low light and letting our eyes adjust.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a lady from behind, with no face showing, with very long hair covering almost her whole back. It looks like she is combing her hair because with her hand she is holding a little tip of it. Her back shines a lot with the light and her clothing is slipping a little off her shoulder. Behind her there is a table with many things: a little box with stripes, a vase with flowers and big leaves, and a shiny little cup with little feet. Everything looks dark as if it were nighttime inside her room.
