What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical lithograph in sepia, black and warm beige on pale paper, surrounded by wide white margins with printed titles above and below. At the centre rises an enormous stone tower, seen slightly from below, which occupies most of the height of the image. It has thick walls of irregular blocks, narrow slit windows scattered across its faces, and three rounded turrets crowned with crenellations and corbelled parapets. At its base there is a dark arched doorway. The building stands on a steep, jagged rocky outcrop rendered with dense hatching and heavy shadows. In the lower foreground, among angular boulders, a lone man in a hat and long coat stands with his back to the viewer, looking up. On the right, a stone bridge or wall with two large round arches leads towards the tower, and two small figures lean on its parapet. To the left, in the distance, the sea appears with several small sailboats and a tiny group of people on a lower platform. The sky, tinted a uniform sandy beige by the tint stone, is empty and smooth, contrasting with the rough textures of stone and rock. Small inscriptions appear in the corners: '15e VUE' and 'XIVe SIECLE'.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tiny man in the foreground and only then climb toward the tower: the scale of the monument emerges from that contrast. Next, look at the figures on the bridge and by the sea, all dwarfed by the stonework. Finally, notice how the tinted sky is almost empty, leaving the stone texture to carry the whole scene.

ContextContexto

This lithograph by Victor Petit (1817–1874), published in Paris in 1860, is plate 13 of 'Architecture Pittoresque ou Monuments des XVeme et XVIeme Siecles: Chateaux de France des XV et XVI Siecles', a portfolio of 100 lithographs with a tint stone. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the publisher and editor was Charles Boivin and the credit line is the Bequest of John Bonebrake. It depicts the Solidor Tower at Saint-Servan, in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, a medieval coastal fortification probably dating from the 14th century, as the printed inscription suggests.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the portfolio title highlights castles of the 15th and 16th centuries, the inscription at the top of this plate places the tower in the 14th century.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how the tint stone creates that uniform sandy beige sky and the warm sepia that wraps the tower. Notice the intact white margins that make the dense hatching of the rocks and the irregular blocks stand out. I am interested in the contrast between the smooth sky and the rough stone, and how the ink achieves those heavy shadows at the base and the dark doorway without losing the details of corbels and crenellations.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This tower reminds me of an old observatory gazing at the horizon. Its narrow little windows are like slits for measuring the sky, and its height on the jagged crag gives it a perfect view over the sea. I imagine the man with hat and long coat searching for constellations under that smooth and empty sky, which looks like a pale dome. Although the image is from 1860 and shows no stars, the solitude of the building invites contemplation of infinite space from the coast.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This tower looks like a giants castle made of little stones! It is super tall and has three little round turrets on top with little crowns. Down below there is a man with a hat and coat who looks tiny because the rock is huge and pointy. On the right there is a bridge with two big arches and two tiny people leaning. Far away on the sea there are little sailboats. I like that the sky is light sandy color with no clouds.
