The image is a vertical lithograph on cream paper, with wide margins and printed captions. In the upper left it reads “44e VUE,” in the upper right “STYLE DE LA FIN DU XVe SIÈCLE,” and below, “TOUR DU PRIEURÉ DE St NICOLAS-AU-BOIS (Aisne)” and “Victor Petit del. et lith.” The center is occupied by a tall, narrow tower of pale brick and stone, seen from a three-quarter angle against a smooth beige sky with almost no clouds. Four cross-mullioned windows are stacked in a straight column on its main face, dark and recessed, with a few smaller openings on the side. On the left rises a slender round turret ending in a steep conical spire, while the flat top of the tower has a small balustrade. The stonework is drawn with fine hatching that suggests worn blocks, stains, and uneven courses. To the right, partly cut off, is a lower building with a sloping tiled roof and arched openings, and behind it the main roof and treetops. The foreground is a dense thicket: tall weeds, leafy shrubs, slender plants, and trees rendered in deep black-green tones. No people or animals appear. The contrast between the luminous, bare architecture above and the shadowy vegetation below gives the building a solitary, slightly overgrown air.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the vertical line of the four stacked windows, then let your eye climb to the small turret and its sharp spire. Next, look down to the wild plants at the base, which make the masonry seem abandoned rather than monumental. Finally, notice the low building on the right: its modest scale is what makes the tower look so tall.

ContextContexto

This print is plate 44 of *Architecture Pittoresque ou Monuments des XVe et XVIe siècles: Châteaux de France des XV et XVI siècles*, a portfolio of 100 lithographs with tint stone published in Paris in 1860. It was drawn and lithographed by Victor Petit (1817–1874), published and edited by Charles Boivin, and printed by Lith. de Godard in Paris. The subject is the tower of the priory of Saint-Nicolas-au-Bois, in the Aisne department of northern France. The heading classifies it as in the style of the late 15th century. Nineteenth-century French publications of this kind systematically recorded older castles and religious buildings. The source gives no information about the priory's present condition.

Curious detailDato curioso

The soft beige that fills the sky and warms the stone is not aged paper alone: it comes from a second lithographic stone, the tint stone, printed beneath the black drawing to add a broad middle tone.

I focus on how Victor Petit used fine hatching to show worn blocks, stains and irregular courses of stone. The tower is tall and narrow, made of brick and light stone that contrasts with the almost black greenish undergrowth in the foreground. I see four dark cross mullioned windows stacked vertically and the slender round turret with its very steep conical spire. It is an 1860 lithograph on cream paper that aims to record the wear of time with precision.

I look at the sky in this plate 44 and I am struck by how smooth and beige it is, almost cloudless, like an empty backdrop that makes the tower stand out. There are no stars or moon, it is daytime, but the tower points upward as if trying to measure the sky. The small balustrade on top makes me think of a lookout to watch the horizon. Below everything is shadow and dark vegetation, above is clear light, like two separate worlds.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This tower looks like a fairy tale castle but lonely and with no people inside. It has four dark windows one on top of the other like closed eyes. On one side there is a little round turret with a very tall pointy hat that looks like a witch hat. Below there are lots of dark green grasses and bushes that almost want to eat the tower. The sky is cream colored and there are not even birds. It feels mysterious and makes me want to explore.
