Graphite with white heightening and orange pastel

What you would seeLo que verías

On warm beige paper, eleven numbered studies of veiled women in headdresses are clustered, drawn in graphite with white heightening and orange-red pastel. At the center, larger and more detailed, a seated woman faces forward in an embroidered dress, light veil and jeweled diadem, posed beneath an arch with a carved column; at her feet lie a tambourine and a brazier. Around her, on a smaller scale, figures stand, sit or appear in bust view, most with faces covered except for the eyes, wrapped in loose robes, cloaks and jewelry suggested by soft shading. The background merges into a sketchy view of domes and minarets under a crescent moon, executed with quick lines and orange touches that underline contours. White highlights bring out folds and veils, contrasting with the gray and brown graphite. Handwritten annotations run along the bottom edge and numbers sit beside each figure, with tape at the borders and the granular texture of the paper clearly visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central seated figure, the most illuminated and sharply defined, then move outward around the circle of veiled faces. Notice how the orange strokes do not fill color but point and correct, and how the mosque background dissolves among the figures like a memory.

ContextContexto

This is a 19th-century drawing by an anonymous artist active in France, executed in graphite with white heightening and orange pastel. It is part of the Drawings collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art under the assigned title Harem Women, though the French inscription at the bottom lists types such as lady of the sultan's harem, woman of the people and other Ottoman social categories. It reflects the European Orientalist interest of the 1800s in depicting dress and customs associated with the Middle East and North Africa. No further information about its authorship or specific circumstances of creation is recorded beyond its technique, cultural attribution and approximate date.

Curious detailDato curioso

Orange pastel over graphite was often used in 19th-century studies to mark corrections or accents without finishing the work, suggesting this sheet likely served as a reference sketch rather than a final artwork.

From my table I see the warm beige paper with its grainy texture and the tape along the edges. I focus on the gray and brown graphite, the white chalk touches that light up the veils and the reddish orange pastel highlighting outlines. The central figure under the arch with a column shows more detail in the embroidered dress and the ornate diadem. I notice the numbers beside each of the eleven figures and the handwritten notes below, fragile and precious.

Look up at the sketched background among domes and minarets drawn with quick lines. There hangs a crescent moon, small but clear, like the one I see on my observing nights. I like that the artist placed it over that imagined Ottoman architecture, because it sets the scene under a night sky. The contrast of graphite with white and orange makes the moon stand out. It is a subtle detail that connects the drawing with the sky we all share.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are eleven women and they all look different! The one in the middle is the biggest and she sits like a queen with her pretty dress and veil. The others are around her, some standing and some sitting, and almost all have their faces covered so you only see their little eyes. Below there is a small tambourine and a brazier. I like finding the numbers next to each one and seeing their shiny jewels painted in white. It feels like a spot the differences game.
