What you would seeLo que verías
The scene fills a vertical sheet of beige paper topped by a semicircular arch that frames the composition like an altarpiece. Everything is drawn in brown ink and wash, with touches of white that give volume to clothing, skin, and wings. In the left foreground, Joseph moves toward the viewer and to the left, holding a tall staff in his right hand; he wears a wide-brimmed hat and sandals, and his dark cloak blows behind him. His leaning body and forward leg convey urgency. With his other hand he leads a donkey barely visible behind him. At center-right, Mary, with a large circular halo or headdress, embraces the naked Christ Child while riding the walking donkey; her swollen mantle floats out to the right. The donkey, seen in profile, steps along a shaded path with low plants in the corners. Behind Joseph appear two figures and a pair of wings, while in the distance are bare trees, hills, buildings, and tiny figures. Above, two naked, winged child angels fly among clouds holding flowering sprigs; to the right, three small birds reinforce the sense of movement. Light models the folds with soft shadows and white highlights.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow Joseph's forward stride and staff, which set the direction of the flight. Then move to Mary and the Child at the center, where the embrace slows the rush and becomes the emotional focus. Finally, look upward: the flying angels and the small birds turn an escape into a journey that also feels protected.
ContextContexto
This is The Flight into Egypt, a drawing by the Italian artist Gregorio Pagani (1558–1605), dated to about 1590 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It closely follows the New Testament account in Matthew 2:13–23: Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus flee to Egypt after learning that King Herod intends to kill the male infants. According to the source, Pagani was commissioned by the Medici for decorative schemes for celebrations and, especially, altarpieces for churches and convents. Few of his paintings have survived, and he is best known for highly finished, fully realized drawings such as this one.

Although Pagani received important painting commissions, he is now best known for his drawings: few of his paintings have survived, while finished sheets like this one preserve his work in remarkably good condition.

I pause to look at how Pagani builds volume using only brown ink and wash on beige paper, with touches of white for light. The semicircular arch crowning the sheet tells us he was thinking of an altarpiece, not a quick sketch. Look at Mary’s puffed drapery, Joseph’s windblown cloak and the angels’ wings: everything is modeled with soft shadows and bright highlights. It is a highly finished drawing from around 1590, one of the few works of his that survive, and that is why we conserve it as if it were a painting.

What draws me most is the narrated sky in this flight. Above, two child angels fly among clouds holding little flowering branches, and to the right three small birds mark direction. Below the journey is urgent: Joseph strides forward with staff and wide-brimmed hat, leading the donkey that carries Mary embracing the Child. In the distance you can make out hills, bare trees and tiny buildings. That contrast between the shaded path and the light air reminds us that, according to Matthew 2:13-23, the family flees by night under a sky that also takes part.

Everyone looks in a hurry! Joseph is almost running with his big staff and his hat, and his cloak is flying. Mary holds the naked Child Jesus very tight on the little donkey that keeps walking. I like how her mantle puffs up as if the wind blew it. Up above there are two little naked angels with small wings carrying tiny flowers, and three little birds go with them. In the back you see little trees with no leaves and tiny houses. Everything is in light and dark brown, with bright white on the clothes.
