What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, on a pale windowsill, sits a brown earthenware pot holding a lush geranium. Its leaves are large and rounded, rendered in muted grey-greens, olive and cream with dark edges that suggest volume; some blossoms appear whitish while the central upper cluster shows soft pink and peach touches, all built with loose pastel strokes that reveal the grainy texture of the paper. The main stem is dark and woody, and the soil is hinted with brown shadows. To the left, a vertical curtain or window frame in faded red and pink borders the scene. Beyond the glass, a wintry urban landscape unfolds: snow-covered rooftops in whites and greys, chimneys puffing grey and bluish smoke, and silhouettes of industrial buildings in slate-blue under a pale sky of dirty yellow and grey. The light is diffuse and cold, an overcast day that flattens contrast and merges inside and outside into an intimate, melancholic atmosphere. The handling is soft and expressive, with sketchy outlines and charcoal smudges that reinforce the sense of a quiet, personal study. The scale feels close and domestic, inviting slow looking at small tonal shifts.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the geranium at the center and how its pale leaves cut against the wintry background. Follow the red vertical line on the left out to the snowy rooftops. Notice how the smoke from the chimneys visually connects the cold outside with the fragile warmth of the indoor plant.

ContextContexto

This work is The Geranium in My Window by Louise M. Dunn (American, 1875–1962), dated c. 1930, executed in pastel and classified as a drawing. It is associated with Cleveland, Ohio, and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the Hinman B. Hurlbut Collection. No detailed description is provided by the source, but the medium and domestic subject are consistent with intimate interior views common in American art during the interwar period, when many regional artists contrasted home life with the industrial city outside. It likely shows a view from the artist’s own home, though the exact location and circumstances are not documented.

Curious detailDato curioso

In pastel, Dunn layers velvety color with visible charcoal lines, so the snow outside and the geranium leaves inside share an almost identical palette of greys, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.

I pause on how the pastel sits on the grained paper, letting the texture show through. The geranium leaves are built with overlapping patches in grayish greens, olive and cream, with dark edges that give volume without closing the outline. I notice its fragility: pastel is pure powder, very sensitive to light and touch. Here the artist left loose strokes, almost a sketch, and brown shadows for the soil. It is an intimate drawing that needs to be kept in very low light.

Even without stars, I am drawn to this overcast daylight over Cleveland. The pale sky, between dirty yellows and grays, is that of an industrial winter, with snow-covered roofs and bluish smoke rising from chimneys. From the light windowsill, the geranium in its brown pot feels like a small observatory of living things: its variegated leaves and whitish flowers with peach touches endure the cold outside. It is the contrast between a warm interior and a hazy exterior.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I really like this little plant! It is in a brown pot on the windowsill and has big leaves like green fans with dark edges. On top it has tiny white flowers with peach-colored centers. Outside everything is white from snow on the roofs and gray smoke comes out of the chimneys, as if it were very cold. Inside, next to the red curtain, the little plant looks warm and happy. It seems someone takes great care of it so it does not freeze.
