What you would seeLo que verías
This is a tall, narrow vertical painting in ink and muted color on yellowed, worn paper. The composition reads from bottom to top in three levels. In the foreground, at the bottom, the water forms rapids made of parallel curved lines and, in the lower left corner, a whirlpool drawn as concentric circles. Small dark rocks and white splashes mark where the current breaks. At lower right, on a rocky ledge, stand three tiny figures beside twisted pines: two visitors in light robes and hats, and a figure in darker clothing who accompanies them. Their very small scale against the mountain emphasizes the immensity of the landscape. In the center falls the main waterfall, a white vertical band of fine lines that fans out as it reaches the pool below. A horizontal band of pale mist cuts across it and separates it from a smaller fall above. The background is filled with jagged peaks and folded, cracked rock faces drawn in gray, ochre, and black brushwork. There are minimal touches of red and green in autumnal trees, dark green pines, and red seals with black calligraphy in the upper right corner.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the whirlpool in the lower left and follow the water upward against the current. Pause at the band of mist in the middle: notice how it interrupts the waterfall and divides it into two drops. Then look for the three tiny figures at lower right; their scale changes the reading of the whole landscape.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this work by Korean artist Han Unpyeong, dated to the late 1800s, depicts Nine-Dragon Falls (Guryongpo), a popular destination at Diamond Mountain (Geumgangsan), in present-day North Korea. Its source highlights the V-shaped valley and the rushing white waterfall as the site’s main attraction. It also identifies the small figures as two excited scholar-tourists accompanied by a Buddhist monk, enjoying the sight and the roar of the water. The painting belongs to the final period of Korea’s Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) and is executed in ink and color on paper. Little more is known from the information provided about the artist’s life.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual detail: the horizontal band of mist cuts the waterfall in two, so we seem to see two separate falls stacked one above the other instead of a single continuous drop.

I pause at the yellowed and worn paper that holds this late nineteenth century waterfall. I notice how ink builds three levels rising from the rapids and the whirlpool of concentric circles to the white stripe of the main fall and the gray peaks above. The touches of red and green, the dark pines and the red seals with black calligraphy feel fragile and beautiful, they need careful preservation to keep sharing the roar of the water.

For me this painting is like looking at the sky but turned vertical, a waterfall dropping from above between rugged mountains that feel like constellations of rock. I love the pale band of mist that cuts the fall and the V shape of the valley, like a cosmic funnel. Those three tiny figures below, two visitors with hats and a monk, remind me how small we are before immensity, just as when we observe the universe.

Wow, it looks like the water will spill out of the paper! At the bottom there is a swirl like a snail shell and little white splashes where it hits the rocks. Up above the waterfall is a very long white curtain split by a cloud. I looked for the tiny people and found three really small ones next to twisted pines, two with light hats and one in dark clothes, they look excited watching all that noisy water.
