What you would seeLo que verías

The painting shows a young woman from the chest up, centered inside a painted oval that occupies almost the entire rectangular canvas. The background within the oval is a muted brownish gray with no objects, furniture, or landscape, so all attention falls on the figure. Her body is turned very slightly, while her face looks almost frontally toward the viewer, with a calm expression, mouth closed, and dark brown eyes set beneath soft brows. Her skin is pale, with pink tones on her cheeks, nose, and lips. Her brown hair is pulled back from her forehead, with small curls at the sides and one long, sinuous lock falling over her left shoulder and resting on her chest. She wears a deep green-blue silk dress with a very low, crossed neckline. Folds and highlights suggest a shiny, heavy fabric that wraps around her torso. At the center of the neckline emerges a white undergarment with delicate undulating edges. The light comes from the front left, models the long neck and broad expanse of the breastbone, and creates gentle shadows. The brushwork is smoother on the face and more visible in the dress and dark corners outside the oval.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with her direct gaze and then follow the single long curl falling over her left shoulder. Next, compare the sheen of the green silk with the soft matte texture of her skin and white undergarment. That contrast, together with the painted oval, changes the portrait from a simple likeness into an image of social presentation.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil on canvas was painted around 1734 by John Smibert (Scottish, 1688–1751), born in Edinburgh and trained in London and Italy. His arrival in the American colonies in 1729, and later his success with clients in Boston, marked a turning point for painting in that context. The sitter was long identified as Judith Colman Bulfinch (1707–1765), wife of Thomas Bulfinch, but that name does not appear in Smibert's recently discovered records. Her identity is therefore not known for certain, and research continues.

Curious detailDato curioso

The oval surrounding the sitter is not a separate frame: it is painted onto the rectangular canvas itself, a common device in portraiture of the period to focus attention on the face.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes in our reading of the portrait when we no longer know for certain who the sitter was?¿Qué cambia en nuestra lectura del retrato cuando ya no sabemos con certeza quién fue la retratada?
  2. How do the low neckline, the gleaming silk, and her serene expression work together to construct an image of femininity for her time?¿Cómo colaboran el escote bajo, la seda brillante y la expresión serena para construir una imagen de feminidad propia de su época?
  3. What effect does the painted oval create compared with a rectangular portrait without that inner frame?¿Qué efecto produce el óvalo pintado frente a un retrato rectangular sin ese marco interior?

If you look closely, you will notice how the painter’s hand changes by area: the face is rendered with a very smooth, almost polished brushstroke to achieve that pale skin with soft pink tones, while in the blue-green silk dress the stroke and the sheen of the fabric become more visible. I love that painted oval framing the figure and leaving the corners dark, and how light from the front models the neck and the crossed neckline with the white undergarment beneath.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this portrait is like observing a planet isolated in darkness. That painted oval works like a telescope: it crops out everything unnecessary and leaves the young woman floating against a dull gray-brown background with no furniture or landscape. The contrast between the illuminated area of the face and chest and the very dark outer corners reminds me of the void around a celestial body. Her serene, direct gaze makes me feel that we are observing her and she is observing us too.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like that the lady looks straight into our eyes and seems calm, as if she is posing without moving at all. Her blue-green dress is very shiny and looks elegant with that crossed neckline and the little white part inside. Her brown hair has a long curl falling over her shoulder and I find that really pretty. The background is plain and there is nothing else, just her inside an oval, like a cut-out photo.
