Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk
What you would seeLo que verías
A wide, horizontal mountain landscape on aged silk, in muted inks and soft colors, with no empty sky: the entire surface is filled with rock, mist, and vegetation. At the center rises a rocky mass with a lobed, almost sculptural silhouette, cut on its left by a pale vertical cliff and flanked by deep ravines. Just right of center, two figures with bundles meet on a path; further down, in the foreground, more travelers lead loaded mules past a building with a gabled tile roof. The eye travels in diagonals: from the russet-leaved trees in the left foreground, up a white winding path to the houses tucked mid-slope, and again up to a suspended bridge that links two peaks at the top center. In the background, on both edges, small pavilions peek out among fog and treetops. The palette is dominated by ochres, gray-browns, and olive greens, with accents of burnt orange and dark pine green. The light is diffuse, shadowless, as if filtered through mist; the volumes are modeled with fine ink washes and dry-brush strokes that give the rock a rough, eroded texture. The scale is disorienting: the humans are tiny flecks against mountains that seem to keep growing behind one another.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First let your eye climb the central rock from the bottom up, then return to the tiny travelers in the lower half. Compare the size of the houses with the nearest trees and the rocks with the farthest peaks, and notice how the fog cuts the composition into staggered planes. Then look for the elevated bridges: they draw a fragile thread where the eye expected only a void.
ContextContexto
Road to Shu (1743), by Yuan Yao, a Chinese painter active in the mid-18th century, is a hanging scroll in ink and color on silk from the Qing dynasty, during the Qianlong reign. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Yuan workshops in Yangzhou produced large paintings to decorate the residences of wealthy salt merchants and princely palaces. The title recalls the flight of Tang emperor Xuanzong to Sichuan after the An Lushan Rebellion (755–763), but the scene shows the transport of goods through difficult mountains and also alludes to Anhui, the homeland of many of those merchants.

Curious detailDato curioso
The road to Shu was already proverbially difficult centuries before this painting: the poet Li Bai (701–762) made it famous in a poem about its steepness, almost contemporary with Xuanzong's flight.

I pause on the silk surface and how it has preserved these muted inks and soft colors for centuries. I notice the rough texture of the rock achieved with dry brush and fine washes, and how the mist blurs everything without creating sharp shadows. I worry about the fragility of that suspension bridge between peaks and the tiled roofs: every brushstroke is a record we must protect from dust and light.

I see a vertical universe where the human scale becomes tiny against the monumental. The travelers and mules are tiny dots beneath rocky masses that seem to pile up like galaxies. That diffuse light filtered through mist reminds me of observing through a dense atmosphere: there is no emptiness, everything is filled with matter. The suspension bridge up high is like a celestial transit connecting two distant and misty worlds.

The mountains are giants with lots of humps! I like searching for the tiny little people with their loaded mules walking along a white and very twisty little path. There are trees with reddish leaves and others very dark green, and little houses with roofs hidden among the mist. If I were a traveler, I would be scared to cross the hanging bridge up there between two very tall rocks, it looks like it swings with the wind!
