What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a plain studio background, shaded from dark gray at the top to almost white at the bottom, sits a low, wide basketry bowl, seen slightly from above. Its shape is nearly cylindrical, with straight walls that narrow very slightly toward a flat base and a broad, open mouth. The surface shows an extremely fine, regular weave with a subtle diagonal rhythm, in a golden tan color. Around the upper part runs a thick band of reddish-brown cedar bark, with short vertical striations; inside the rim a darker, coarser texture is visible, along with the concentric rings of the interior bottom. Decoration is restrained: just above the middle, a horizontal dark-red band combines thin lines with a row of tiny dots or openings, and near the base two parallel red stripes repeat the color. The light is soft and comes from the front and above, modeling the volume gently and casting a short shadow to the right and behind. On the right side of the rim, a small pale tag and a few loose fibers break the perfection of the contour, a reminder of its life as a museum object.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the overall silhouette, low and stable, then move closer to the weave until the diagonal rhythm appears. Notice how the red bands organize the surface and how the thick rim changes the reading: it stops being just a container and becomes a carefully finished edge.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art record, this piece is titled Bowl, is by an unknown maker, and dates to about 1900; it is attributed to the Makah culture of the Northwest Coast in the late 19th century. It is made of cedar bark and deer grass using wrapped twining, and belongs to the Basketry category in the Art of the Americas department. It was presented by William Albert Price in memory of Mrs. William Albert Price. The Makah are an Indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast, widely known for work in plant fibers and cedar. It is not known who wove this bowl, what its exact use was, or precisely where it was collected; it was probably an everyday or storage vessel, but that is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the upper band is made of much wider, rougher strips than the rest of the body, so the mouth feels almost like a wooden ring crowning an extremely fine textile.

This low, wide bowl makes me pause at its incredibly fine and even weave, in a golden beige tone, made with cedar bark and deer grass using wrapped twining. I notice the thick reddish brown band at the top and the dark red bands: one with tiny dots near the middle and two parallel ones near the base. I am moved by the small light tag and loose fibers on the rim, traces of its life as a museum piece. It is a work by an unknown Makah maker, around 1900.

I see this bowl like a flattened orbit: wide, open, with almost straight walls narrowing gently toward the flat base. Its golden beige surface has a subtle diagonal rhythm, like the concentric rings visible on the interior bottom. The horizontal red bands remind me of an equator and parallels mapping space. Soft light models its volume and leaves a short shadow to the right, like a small eclipse. It is a Makah piece from around 1900, serene and precisely measured.

This bowl looks like a short and super wide little basket, like for keeping treasures! It is golden beige and looks woven very tightly, with tiny diagonal lines. On top it has a rough reddish brown band and lower down some red lines with little dots that look like a pretty belt. Inside it looks darker with little circles at the bottom. It has a small white tag on the rim, like its name tag at the museum. I really like it!

¡Me gusta mucho!
