What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a ceramic vessel with a plump, flattened globular body, almost like a canteen or wineskin, photographed frontally against a soft gradient background that fades from dark charcoal at the top to pale gray below. Three cylindrical necks rise from the top: two taller, narrower side spouts ending in flared rims with built-in strainers, and a shorter, wider central mouth with a flat lip and no lid visible in the image. The entire surface is covered with painted bands that follow the vessel's contours: black scrollwork on the necks, diamond hatching beneath them, and concentric stripes wrapping the belly with rows of red and white dots, undulating vines, stylized palmettes, leaf sprigs and meander patterns. The clay ground is a matte beige-buff, overlaid with crisp black, red and white brushwork that gives a textile-like richness. Near the bottom center a small loop handle projects, also ornamented. Soft, even lighting models the volume without glare, reveals a porous, slightly worn matte texture and casts a faint shadow beneath the object.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the three necks and notice how the two outer strainer spouts contrast with the broader central opening. Trace the painted bands curving around the belly and finish on the small lower handle that hints at how the flask was carried and poured.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this ceramic shape is called an askos for its resemblance to the animal skins used to hold wine in ancient Greece, but it developed in Daunia, north of Apulia on the Adriatic coast of southern Italy. It dates to 300–200 BCE and is attributed to a South Italian, Daunian or Canosan culture, by an unknown maker. This example is unusual for its three openings — one once lidded and two spouted with built-in strainers — and for its densely painted decoration of geometric and vegetal patterns in black with added red and white arranged in bands following the vessel's contours. No specific findspot is recorded for this work.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite its Greek name, the askos shape is South Italian in origin, and this Daunian example is notable for preserving two integrated strainers intended to filter liquid while pouring.

  2. What does the dense, carefully banded decoration suggest about the object's function or status?¿Qué te sugiere la decoración tan densa y simétrica sobre el valor que tenía este objeto para quien lo usó?

What fascinates me about this askos is how elaborate yet fragile its surface is. I see the globular beige body with black, red and white painting arranged in bands that follow the curve, like a textile. On the necks there are scrolls and below diamond lattices, then stripes with dots, waves and palmettes. The three vertical necks make me think about its use and cleaning: two pouring spouts with strainers and a wider central mouth. I notice the soft wear and porosity that reveal age without losing the decorative rhythm.

This askos looks like a small flattened planet with three chimneys pointing to the sky. Its belly is a compressed sphere radiating rings, just like the circles we draw to map orbits. The bands with red and white dots remind me of constellations arranged in stripes, and the meanders and leaves are like repeated trajectories. The two side strainers and the central mouth make me imagine observatories that filter and let only the essential through, as if the vessel also wanted to strain light.

It looks like a chubby canteen with three little necks on top, like it has two ears for pouring and a mouth in the middle! I like that it is all striped with little drawings: red and white dots, waves, little leaves and shapes that look like black diamonds. It is cookie beige and has a tiny ring at the bottom that looks like a small handle. I imagine if you pour water it comes out through the two strainers and little leaves do not escape. It is old but it looks cheerful, like wearing a very colorful sweater.
