Ink and gold on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single manuscript page, upright and photographed against a flat gray-beige background. The paper is tan, aged and uneven, with darker edges, small stains, soft tears, and worn areas, especially along the lower margin and the left side, where it joins the binding. On the far left, part of an adjoining leaf and several stitch or binding holes are visible, some surrounded by darkened, frayed paper. At the center is a rectangular block of handwritten text framed by very thin lines in blue, red, and a muted golden tone. At the top of the block is a smaller compartment with a short heading in pale, faded ink. Below it, more than ten lines of black cursive script flow from right to left, with sloping strokes, linked letters, elongated curves, and dots placed above and below the main line. Some lines descend diagonally, while one shorter line creates a pause in the visual rhythm. The wide lower and right margins remain mostly empty, except for a small isolated word beneath the frame and a few dark spots near the bottom edge. The lighting is even and soft, emphasizing the fibrous, matte texture of the paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the contrast between the wide, almost empty margin and the compact block of writing. Then follow the thin frame toward the paler heading at the top and notice how discreet the gold is. Finally, look for the small word below the frame and the holes along the binding edge: both reveal how the book was assembled and read.
ContextContexto
This is folio 17, verso, from the Mir’at al-quds, or Mirror of Holiness, by Father Jerome Xavier, dated 1602. According to the source, it was made in Allahabad, in Mughal India, for Prince Salim (1569–1627), using ink and gold on paper, and it is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Xavier was a Jesuit author, and this Persian work is devoted to the life of Christ, placing it at a point of contact between European Christian missions and the Persian-speaking Mughal court. The specific passage written on this page is not identified in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: although the technique lists gold, there is no large gilded image here; the gold appears discreetly in the ruling and the heading, while black ink and aged paper dominate.

I pause on this toasted paper from 1602, made in Allahabad for Prince Salim. I see matte fibers, darkened edges, tiny spots and small tears at the bottom and left, where the sewing holes of the binding remain. The central block of Persian calligraphy is held by very fine lines in blue, red and muted gold, with a pale heading above. There are more than ten lines in black ink running right to left, with dots and linked curves. The soft light reveals its aged serenity.

It reminds me of a charted sky. This folio from the Mirror of Holiness, dedicated to the life of Christ and written in Persian by the Jesuit Jerome Xavier, is a crossing of worlds between Europe and the Mughal court. The rectangle of text is like an ordered constellation: more than ten lines moving right to left, with a brief heading and a shorter line that breaks the rhythm. The blue, red and gold frame is its orbit. Today it is kept in Cleveland, yet it still spins between two cultures.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a very very old letter that has traveled a lot. The paper is toasted cookie color, with little spots as if dust of time fell on it. On the left you can see tiny holes where it was sewn like a notebook. In the middle there is a little rectangle with many black letters dancing right to left, all close together with long tails. On top there is a tiny faded heading. Below there is a lonely little word. I like to imagine someone wrote it with ink and a bit of gold.

Looking at the old paper, what is its overall tone: bright white or toasted with darker edges?
HintPista
Look at the background of the page photographed on the grayish support, not the frame.
#2
On the left, where the leaf joins the binding, what little round marks does the sewing leave?
HintPista
Look for several dark little dots aligned near the frayed edge.
Busca varios puntitos oscuros alineados cerca del borde deshilachado.
