Ink and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

A single aged manuscript page fills most of the frame, photographed against a flat grayish background. The paper is warm tan, uneven at the edges, with darker stains, small creases, and worn corners; at the lower left and lower right there are paler repair patches. At the upper left, in small dark characters, a folio number appears to read 22. In the center sits a vertical rectangular text block, set within a wide, mostly empty margin. Thin framing lines in blue, red, and a muted golden tone separate the writing from the margin and give the page a quiet order. Inside, about fifteen lines of fluid black script flow right to left, dense and elegant, with sweeping curves, compact clusters, and small diacritical marks; line spacing is regular, though the strokes vary in thickness. No illustration or human figure interrupts the text. Along the right edge runs a narrower, damaged binding strip with visible stitch holes and darkened tears. Beyond it, a sliver of the facing page is visible, also tan, with the edge of another framed text block. The light is even and soft, revealing the paper's fibrous texture and slight undulations without harsh shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the calm balance between the wide empty margin and the dense block of writing, almost like an island of text. Then move closer to the fine colored rules and look at how each line begins, flows, and ends. Finally, shift your attention to the right edge: the binding holes and the sliver of the next page remind you that this was a book to be handled, not just a loose sheet.

Curious detailDato curioso

A Christian life of Christ, written in Persian by a Jesuit and copied and decorated at a Mughal Muslim court, could circulate in the same manuscript culture as Persian poetry and imperial chronicles.

This page speaks to me through its material. I see a warm ochre paper with stains, creases and worn corners that tell of four centuries of life. At the bottom there are pale repair patches and on the right, sewing holes and tears from the binding. At the center, about fifteen lines of black calligraphy float inside a fine frame in blue, red and muted gold. I am moved by its serenity and its fragility, that balance between ink and gold on paper that we try to preserve without erasing its traces.

I am drawn to the order of this page as if it were a mapped sky. The text forms a dense vertical rectangle, surrounded by a wide empty margin like a calm space. At the top left I spot folio number 22, a small coordinate that places this sheet in a larger universe. The lines read right to left, with a steady rhythm and diacritical marks that look like constellations. With no images, it is a map made only of words, designed to guide the gaze and thought in the Mughal court.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet looks very old and wrinkly like a treasure map. It is cookie-colored with little spots and has pale patches at the bottom like bandages. In the middle there are many neat black lines that are very elegant tiny letters, all straight inside a blue and red frame. At the top left there is a little number 22. There are no drawings of people, just letters. I imagine someone wrote it with a lot of patience many, many years ago in Allahabad.
