What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a single manuscript leaf photographed vertically against a plain light-gray background. On the far left, a narrow strip of the binding remains visible, separated by a dark vertical gap and pierced by small holes with remnants of thread, like an old stitched spine. The paper is a warm, aged tan, uneven and lightly stained, with darker edges, soft creases, and a slightly rough, fibrous texture. Near the upper right edge, a small pale tab protrudes, probably a modern mount or marker. At the center, a tall rectangular text block is framed by fine blue and reddish lines, with a delicate golden rule inside. Within it are about fourteen lines of black script in a fluid, diagonal hand, densely and rhythmically written, with sweeping curves and dots. At the top, a separate rectangular heading holds lettering in pale gold, paler than the body text. The generous margin is mostly empty, except for a small diagonal handwritten note in the lower left corner. There are no figures or landscapes: lettering, paper, and frame carry the whole image. The light is even and soft, without harsh shadows, revealing the manuscript's fragile, lived-in surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the framing and the empty margin, then get close to the slanting, fluid script. Notice the heading set apart at the top and the small diagonal note at the lower left: together they turn a seemingly plain page into an object with order, use, and later readings.

ContextContexto

This is a text page from the Mir’at al-quds, Mirror of Holiness, by the Jesuit Father Jerome Xavier, dated 1602. According to the source, it was made in Mughal India, at Allahabad, for Prince Salim (1569–1627), who later reigned as Emperor Jahangir, using ink and gold on paper. In Persian, the court language of the Mughal Empire, the work presented the life of Christ to a courtly audience. The scribe is unknown. It is not known from the available information which passage this particular folio contains.

Curious detailDato curioso

A Christian life of Christ, written in Persian by a Jesuit and copied in a Mughal court workshop for a Muslim prince, makes this page an early example of translation between religions, languages, and visual cultures.

Look closely and the paper itself speaks. It is warm and toasted in tone, with visible fibers, soft stains and darker edges from age. On the left you can still see the tiny holes from the sewing thread, a sign this leaf was once stitched into a book. The text sits inside a frame of blue and reddish lines with a thin gold fillet. At the top, the heading in pale gold is more faded. What matters to me is that you notice both fragility and care: every line and every empty margin is also preserved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like an orderly sky. The rectangular block of about fourteen lines is a constellation of black strokes, curved and rhythmic, with dots like stars. It is framed by blue and reddish lines like orbits, and at the top a small golden cartouche works as a celestial title. There are no figures, only writing in Persian, the language of the Mughal court, telling the life of Christ for Prince Salim here. It makes me think how words can also guide, like maps of the night sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the writing is dancing! The letters are black and a bit slanted, with long tails and little dots. They sit inside a box with blue and red lines and a golden shine. The paper looks very old, the color of a toasted cookie, with a darker edge. On the left you see little holes where it was sewn, like a well used little notebook. At the top there is a small golden box and at the bottom a tiny diagonal note. There are no little pictures, but it still looks pretty and important.
