Ink and gold on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
A single vertical manuscript page fills most of the view, photographed slightly at an angle against a pale ground. The paper is warm tan and visibly aged, darker and mottled near the top, with soft stains, small spots, and uneven edges. At center is a neat rectangular text block, taller than it is wide, enclosed by fine ruled lines in dark blue, rust red, and gold. Inside, twelve horizontal lines of dense black script flow from right to left in a fluid, slanted hand, with sweeping curves, stacked strokes, and small diacritical marks. A shorter, paler heading sits in a separate compartment at the top of the block. Wide empty margins surround the writing, giving it a calm, spacious presence. Along the right edge, several punched binding holes interrupt the paper, two with small triangular tears. A narrow strip of the facing page is visible at right, and a faint ghost of writing shows through from the left. Tiny handwritten numerals appear near the upper corners, including a penciled “19” that looks like a later addition. The surface seems smooth but worn, more like handled paper than a flat printed sheet.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the ruled frame and notice how orderly the page feels before trying to follow the script. Then look for the small, lighter heading at the top of the text block, set apart from the main lines. Finally, move to the right margin: the binding holes and torn edge turn an elegant page into a physical object that was assembled, handled, and preserved.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a text page from the *Mir’at al-quds* (Mirror of Holiness) by Father Jerome Xavier, dated 1602. It was made in Allahabad, in Mughal India, for Prince Salim (1569–1627), later the emperor Jahangir, using ink and gold on paper. The author of this copy is unknown. Xavier was a Jesuit who worked at the Mughal court, and the *Mirror of Holiness* is a Persian-language life of Christ produced in that cross-cultural setting. The Cleveland Museum of Art holds the page in its Department of Indian and Southeast Asian Art; the specific episode discussed on this leaf is not identified in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this is an unillustrated text page, gold was still used in its border — a sign that, in a luxury manuscript made for a prince, even the pages without paintings were finished as precious objects.

This leaf tells me about its age and care. I see a warm ochre paper, darker and mottled at the top, with soft stains, tiny speckles and uneven edges from handling. At the center, the text block is framed by very thin lines in dark blue, rust red and gold, and inside there are twelve lines of black ink with fluid strokes and small marks. On the right I notice the binding holes, two with small triangular tears, and at the top that pencil 19 added later catches the eye.

What amazes me is the order. A perfect rectangle, taller than it is wide, floats with wide empty margins that bring calm, like a night sky around a constellation. Inside, twelve lines run from right to left in dense, elegant black script, with broad curves and overlapping strokes. At the top there is a separate compartment with a shorter heading. The framing lines in blue, red and gold are like orbits holding everything together, and that slight tilt in the photo reminds us we are looking at a real, fragile object.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a page from a very old and special book. The paper is cookie-colored, with little spots and slightly wobbly edges. In the middle there is a rectangle full of lines of black letters that go the other way, from right to left, and they look close together with little tails. Around it there is a thin border in blue, red and gold. On one side you can see little holes where it was stitched and at the top there is a small 19 written in pencil. I like that it leaves lots of empty space to breathe.

Count the lines in the central block of black writing: how many are there?
