Ink and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open manuscript page against a plain grayish background. Slightly left of center is a vertical leaf of aged paper, in shades of cream and pale ochre, with uneven edges, small dark specks, and a broad stain from damp across the top. Most of the sheet is a wide, empty margin. In the middle, enclosed by fine rules in orange, blue, and gold, is a rectangular block of text written in black ink in flowing Persian script, its strokes thick and thin, slanting and closely linked. There are eleven lines in the main block, fairly evenly spaced, and one further line separated below by a horizontal rule, inside the same frame. The ink varies in density, and a few strokes look bolder or slightly blurred. At the right edge a vertical fold and stitch holes mark the binding; a small tear or knot of thread appears midway down. Beyond it, a strip of the facing page is visible, with another framed text block cut off by the edge of the photograph. The light is soft and even, revealing the fibrous, slightly rough texture of the paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, look at the empty margin and then at the ruled block: the contrast makes the writing feel protected. Next, follow the flow of the lines and notice how the final line, set apart at the bottom, changes the rhythm of the page. Look closely at the right edge, where the stitching and the neighboring page remind you that this leaf was bound and read as part of a book.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a text page from the Mir'at al-quds, or Mirror of Holiness, by Father Jerome Xavier, dated 1602 and produced in Mughal India, at Allahabad, for Prince Salim (1569–1627), later the emperor Jahangir. It is executed in ink and gold on paper and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Jerome Xavier was a Jesuit active at the Mughal court, and he wrote in Persian a life of Christ intended for that courtly milieu. This leaf contains text only; it is not known from the available data who the calligrapher was, nor which exact passage is written here.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the work tells a Christian story, it was written in Persian and produced at a Muslim Mughal court in India: on this single page, European, Persian, and South Asian traditions meet.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the paper and what time has done to it. I see creamy and light ochre tones with dark spots and that large tide mark of humidity at the top that speaks of centuries of storage. The black ink varies in density and some strokes look heavier. I notice the thin rules in orange, blue and gold framing the text and the wide empty margin that lets the page breathe. I look at the right fold with sewing holes and that little knot, traces of the book as a physical object.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I think about the encounter this page represents. A Jesuit writes in Persian, in 1602, in Allahabad, for Prince Salim, the future Jahangir. It is not a starry sky but a bridge between worlds. This sheet is text only, with no images, made with ink and gold on paper. We do not know who the calligrapher was or which passage from the life of Christ is copied here. I am amazed how a religious text travels and adapts to a distant Mughal court.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little old creamy sheet with a big stain on top as if it got wet. In the middle there is a rectangle with very pretty slanted black letters that I cannot read because they are in another language. Around the rectangle there are thin lines in orange, blue and gold. On the sides there is a lot of empty space. On the right side you can see where the page is stitched and a little bit of the next page peeks through. I like to imagine someone writing very carefully.
