Ink and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

A single aged page from a bound manuscript fills almost the entire view, seen straight on against a pale, neutral background. The paper is cream and light tan, thinner and darker at the edges, with soft water stains across the top, small spots, and a slightly rough, fibrous surface. At right, a narrow strip of the facing page and the gutter are visible, pierced by small dark binding holes and touched with faint greenish discoloration. In the center, a tall rectangular text block is framed by fine parallel rules in gold, blue, and reddish orange. A smaller heading panel sits at the top of that frame. Inside, about thirteen lines of black Persian script flow in a fluid, right-to-left cursive, with words rising, falling, and nesting closely together; letterforms vary from tiny marks and dots to long horizontal sweeps. The handwriting is dark and generally crisp, though density varies line by line. The generous blank margin makes the writing feel both intimate and monumental, at the scale of a page meant to be held close. No figures, landscape, or illustration appear—only script, ruled borders, worn paper, and the physical trace of the binding.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the framed block of text and follow its dense, flowing lines from top to bottom, even if you cannot read Persian. Then move outward to the wide, worn margins and the binding edge at right. That contrast between a carefully ordered center and an aging, exposed page is what shifts the reading from document to lived object.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a text page from the Mir'at al-quds, or Mirror of Holiness, by Father Jerome Xavier, dated 1602. It was made in Mughal India, at Allahabad, for Prince Salim (1569–1627), later the emperor Jahangir, using ink and gold on paper. Jerome Xavier was a Jesuit missionary, and the work is a life of Christ written in Persian for the Mughal court. This leaf contains only text; whether it came from an illustrated copy or what exact passage it records is not stated in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Mirror of Holiness tells the life of Jesus in Persian, the language of culture and government at the Mughal court, so a Christian narrative circulated there in its own literary language.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does a sacred story change when it is written in the literary language of another court and religion?¿Cómo cambia un relato sagrado cuando se escribe en la lengua literaria de otra corte y otra religión?
  2. What can the margins, stains, and binding holes tell us that the text itself cannot?¿Qué pueden contarnos los márgenes, las manchas y los agujeros de la costura que el texto por sí solo no dice?
  3. If you cannot read the script, what do rhythm, density, and framing communicate on their own?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I linger on the creamy paper with darker edges and those soft damp stains at the top. I see thirteen lines of Persian calligraphy in black ink, framed by fine lines in gold, blue and reddish orange. I am moved by the border and the small cartouche for the heading, and how the little dark sewing holes along the inner spine tell the life of this 1602 leaf made in Allahabad for Prince Salim.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What I see are rows of writing that rise and fall like constellations aligned inside a golden rectangle. There are no figures or landscapes, just the universe of black ink on creamy paper. I think about how this page from the Mirror of Holiness, a life of Christ written in Persian by the Jesuit Jerome Xavier, tried to build a bridge between different skies in Mughal India.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a treasure of old cookie-colored paper with little dots and stains. In the middle there is a little box with many tiny black letters all close together and some stretch like little tails. Around it there are golden, blue and orange lines. On one side another page peeks out and you can see little holes where the book is sewn. I like that it has no pictures, just letters that look like tidy little ants.
