Ink and gold on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single aged manuscript page, slightly yellowed and photographed against a pale, neutral background. To the right, a narrow strip of the facing page is visible, together with the central fold and small dark thread ties passing through holes along the binding. The main page is dominated by a tall, rectangular text block, centered and enclosed by fine lines in blue, gold, and reddish tones. Inside are roughly thirteen lines of flowing black calligraphy, slanted and closely linked, with a smaller heading boxed at the top in lighter ink. No figures, landscapes, or ornaments interrupt the writing: the page relies on spacing and the ruled frame for its order. Broad irregular water stains darken the upper margin and edges, especially at the top and lower left, where the paper looks thinner, wavy, and brittle. A few tiny dark specks and small losses mark the surface. The light is even and soft, with minimal shadow, allowing the contrast between the warm, mottled paper and the dense, glossy black ink to stand out. The scale feels intimate, like a book meant to be held and read up close.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the framing that organizes the writing, then come closer to the slope and ligatures of the black script. Notice next the water stains and the sewing holes along the right edge: the damage reveals the book as a used, material object, not only a text. Compare the careful regularity of the central block with the loose, aged emptiness surrounding it.

I pause on what time has left on the paper: that warm yellowish tone, the damp stains at the top and bottom left, the wavy and brittle edge and those tiny dark speckles. The text block is well centered, with about thirteen lines of very fluid black calligraphy and a frame of blue, golden and reddish lines. On the right you can glimpse the neighboring page, the fold and the binding knots. It is an intimate work, made to be read up close and with care.

It makes me think about how knowledge was stored when there were no presses or screens. Here there are no figures or landscapes, just writing ordered by space and framing. That tall rectangle, the thirteen linked lines and the short heading above in lighter ink remind me of a constellation of signs. Knowing it is in Persian, from 1602, made in Allahabad for Prince Salim in Mughal India, I see this page as a map of encounter between different traditions.

It looks like a little book to hold close in your hands. The sheet is stained as if water spilled on it long ago and it dried all wrinkly. In the middle there are many little black lines that join together like flowery letters, all neatly inside a blue and golden frame with a touch of reddish. On one side you can see the other page and little threads that hold it together. There are no little pictures, just letters someone wrote with a lot of patience.
