Ink and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single manuscript page photographed straight-on against a pale background, with the binding edge visible at left. The paper, in cream and ochre tones, looks aged, slightly wavy, and irregular at the edges; a darker damp stain spreads across the top, and small specks dot the surface. Along the spine there are tears and remnants of stitching that reveal a narrow strip of the preceding page. Most of the space is taken up by a rectangular block of text, centered and surrounded by wide margins. It is framed by fine rules in blue, red, and gold. At the top, a small compartment separated by a line contains a short heading in paler ink. Below it run about thirteen lines of black cursive calligraphy, slanted, dense, and fluid, read from right to left, with strokes that stretch and curve above the baseline. A few words seem to be picked out with barely perceptible reddish touches. Outside the frame, in the lower left corner, there is a brief handwritten note written diagonally. The light is even and soft, without strong shadows, and it emphasizes the fibrous texture of the paper against the smooth, dark surface of the ink.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the framing and margins, not just the script: the ruled border turns the page into a carefully ordered object. Then follow the slant and flow of the lines from right to left. The small diagonal note at lower left changes the reading—it is a later trace outside the main, formal order.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although its subject is Christian, the page adopts the format, language, and calligraphic presentation of a Persian court manuscript: a striking example of translation not only of words, but also of visual form.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

What holds my attention is the condition of the paper, in creamy and ochre tones, slightly wavy with uneven edges. By the spine on the left I see tears and stitch remains that reveal a strip of the previous page, and at the top a darker damp stain with tiny spots. In the center, the text block is contained by thin rules in blue, red and gold, with wide margins that protect it. The even black ink contrasts with the soft fiber of the paper.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this page is like an orderly night sky. The rectangular text block in the center, with its thirteen lines of dense calligraphy reading from right to left, looks like a compact constellation. The wide margins are the emptiness that lets the words breathe, like space between stars. The small cartouche at the top is a moon guiding the reading. It gives me serenity to picture someone in Allahabad in 1602 tracing each curve with patience.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an old treasure. The paper is cookie-colored and looks a bit wrinkled, with a big stain at the top as if it got wet. All the writing is in a little square in the middle, with little lines in blue, red and gold around it, like a pretty frame. The letters are black, stretched out with little tails, and they go the other way. At the bottom there is a tiny note written sideways, like a secret. I like to imagine who wrote it so carefully.
