Ink and gold on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single manuscript leaf photographed head-on against a light gray background, filling almost the entire frame. The outer paper is thick, porous, and toasted ochre in tone, with irregular edges, small stains, folds, and losses. Along the right margin the binding edge is visible, with five dark perforations, some frayed, where stitching would have passed; at the bottom that edge is torn and lifted. A small yellow tab peeks in at the top. At the center, pasted or painted onto that leaf, is a lighter vertical rectangle of cream-colored paper containing the text. It is framed by fine gold, blue, and reddish ruled lines. At the top, a narrow horizontal cartouche separates the heading, written in paler or golden ink. Below it follow some fourteen dense lines of calligraphy in black ink, with slanted cursive strokes, dots, and curves rising and falling rhythmically. A few words appear underlined or heightened. The writing fills nearly the whole block, leaving minimal margins. There is a small translucent stain toward the middle right and wear at the corners, but overall the page remains legible and flat, evenly lit.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the framing and the binding holes to understand the page as a physical object, not just as text. Then follow the density and inclination of the calligraphic lines; the small header cartouche and the translucent stain on the right change the reading, reminding us of the manuscript's age and handling.

I pause on what time has left on this 1602 leaf. I see the outer paper in toasted ochre, porous, with irregular edges, stains and creases, and the broken, lifted edge at the bottom. On the right margin I count five dark sewing holes from the old binding. At the center, the cream rectangle is held by thin gold, blue and reddish rules that still frame the black ink. The upper cartouche and the fourteen lines of Persian calligraphy remain legible, though the corners are worn and there is a small translucent spot.

I look at this page as if it were an ordered night sky. The toasted ochre paper is the dark background and the cream block at the center is a rectangular constellation bordered by gold, blue and reddish lines. At the top, the narrow cartouche marks the horizon; below, fourteen lines of black ink move like tilted orbits, with dots like stars. I am intrigued that this Mirror of Holiness made in Allahabad for Prince Salim brought the life of Christ in Persian to the Mughal court, like a bridge between distant worlds.

This leaf looks like an old little treasure. The outer paper is toasted cookie brown, with nibbled edges, little stains and five small holes where it was sewn, and the bottom is peeling a bit. On top they pasted a cream rectangle with tiny gold, blue and reddish lines around it, like a pretty frame. Inside there are many small black letters in fourteen rows that go up and down like waves, and at the top a tiny strip with pale golden letters. There is a small yellow tab on top and a see-through spot, but you can still read everything.
