What you would seeLo que verías
A single long, narrow leaf stretches horizontally across a plain off-white background, much wider than it is tall. Its surface is pale tan and fibrous, with fine longitudinal streaks, slightly darker stained edges, and small irregularities along the top and bottom borders, especially at the worn corners. Dense lines of rounded, looping script cover almost the entire leaf in dark brown-black, leaving only very narrow margins. The writing is small, even, and tightly packed, creating a continuous textured band. About one third and two thirds of the way across, two circular holes pierce the leaf. Each is surrounded by a hand-drawn reddish-orange ring, slightly imperfect, that interrupts the text around it. Smaller red marks also appear above some lines, like brief accents among the dark characters. On the far left margin there are a few isolated marks, set apart from the main text block. The light is even and soft, with no strong shadows, so the shallow incisions, grain of the plant fiber, and contrast between the dark script, red circles, and aged beige surface remain clearly visible. The overall impression is of something fragile, light, and made to be held in both hands.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, stand back and notice the proportions: an extremely wide, narrow page made to be held horizontally. Then move closer and follow the lines from left to right, letting your eye pause at the two red rings. Notice how that interruption turns a dense page of writing into a carefully ordered, tactile object.
ContextContexto
This is a single leaf, recto side, from a Buddhist manuscript made in Sri Lanka by an unknown author, dated by the Cleveland Museum of Art to around 1700, in the Sinhalese culture of the late 17th century. According to the museum, palm leaves were prepared by boiling them, drying them in the sun, and rubbing them with oils. A scribe then incised the text with a metal stylus, and charcoal powder was wiped across the surface so it settled only into the cut lines. The exact text on this leaf is not transcribed in the source, so its specific content is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The writing was not first drawn with ink: charcoal darkens it only after being rubbed over the page, because the powder stays trapped in the grooves incised by the stylus.

What moves me most is how fragile and resilient this leaf is at the same time. I see a beige vegetal fiber with lengthwise grain and edges darkened by time, and tiny regular incised writing made with a stylus and charcoal powder. I pause at those two holes with a reddish orange ring: they are not damage, they are part of its binding. The small red marks and the worn corners tell me about use, about hands that held it carefully for centuries.

I look at this long narrow leaf and think of constellations of text. The dark brown writing forms a dense continuous band, like a night sky full of stars. The two holes with reddish rings are like two small suns interrupting the pattern, making me search for patterns and voids. The red marks are isolated flashes. It is from the 17th century, from Sri Lanka, and although we do not know what it says, its precise order reminds me of a map for finding your way and contemplating.

It looks like a magic and super long leaf, like a giant ruler made of a dried little plant. It is completely covered with tiny round letters very close together in dark brown, and it has two little holes with an orange circle around them, like two little eyes. There are also red dots hidden among the letters. It looks old and delicate, with corners a bit worn, as if many people had held it with both hands to read an important secret.
