gum tempera and ink on palm leaves
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is an extremely long, narrow leaf, seen frontally against a plain white background, occupying almost the full width of the image and very little of its height. Its shape is that of a horizontal rectangular strip with slightly rounded ends, irregular edges, and a matte, brownish-beige surface characteristic of prepared palm leaf. Across it run three dense blocks of black writing, aligned from left to right and separated by two white circular perforations, placed at roughly one third and two thirds of its length. Each block contains several lines of small, regular, closely spaced characters; the ink forms a vibrating texture, almost like a dark woven cloth, contrasting with the pale upper and lower margins. Brief annotations can be made out along the edges: tiny numbers and marks at the top, on the left, and on the right, easy to overlook. The lighting is even, without dramatic shadows, revealing small variations in tone, fibers, and wear at the ends. There are no human figures or visible illustrations on this side; the main presence is the writing itself, repeated and orderly, conveying an intimate scale. It seems made to be held close, read slowly, and passed from hand to hand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the horizontal pull of the page from end to end, then slow down over a single line of script. Notice the two white holes: they interrupt the reading, but also give the dense text its rhythm and structure. Finally, look for the tiny numbers and marks on the margins.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is folio 67, verso, from a manuscript of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines (Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra), a Mahayana Buddhist text devoted to wisdom. It is dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat calendar, in the month of Ashvina. The source associates it with Eastern India, Bihar, and Vikramashila Monastery, and notes "Painting: Nepal, Kathmandu," without specifying in this record how those origins are divided. It was made with gum tempera and ink on palm leaves, a characteristic support for pothi-format manuscripts. Its author is unknown. It now belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Hoy pertenece al Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two circular holes were not decoration: in palm-leaf manuscripts of this format, a cord could pass through them to bind the loose folios together and keep them in order.

I focus on how fragile and resilient this beige brownish palm strip feels. I see three dense blocks of black writing, separated by two white circular holes that once held the cord of the pothi format. The ink creates a dark woven texture with clear margins above and below, and the matte surface shows fibers and wear along the rounded ends. It is folio 67 verso of a sutra copied in 1119, and it amazes me that the gum tempera and ink remain so legible after nine centuries of handling and travel.

What draws me in is that this leaf has an exact date: Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar calendar, month of Ashvina. It is a folio from the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines sutra, linked to Bihar and Vikramashila monastery, with a note of painting from Nepal, Kathmandu. Like someone recording an eclipse, the scribe fixed time and place. The two white holes and three text blocks remind me of ordered constellations, small markers to keep from getting lost in a river of characters.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant cookie-colored ruler with tiny black letters. There are three groups of super tight lines and two little round white holes, as if someone made confetti on the leaf. Up top there are tiny numbers you can barely see. No pictures, just letters. I imagine holding it with both hands and reading slowly, moving my finger without touching the ink. It is super old, from the year 1119, and it traveled from very far away to rest now in a museum.
