What you would seeLo que verías
A single long, narrow leaf is shown horizontally against a plain, pale grey background, like a strip meant to be read from left to right. Its surface is warm beige and light tan, with slightly darker, worn edges and small irregularities that reveal its age and plant origin. The leaf is not perfectly rectangular: the ends taper and soften, the margins undulate slightly, and tiny losses and fibres can be seen along the edges. Across almost its entire length, dense black writing is arranged in three blocks separated by two small white circular holes with dark outlines. Each block contains several tight horizontal lines of small, even characters, written with a fine, controlled, repetitive rhythm. On the far left, a few characters also run vertically along the edge. The ink varies subtly, at times deeper, at times browner, suggesting the pressure of the hand and the absorption of the leaf. There are no large figures or ornaments on this side; the visual effect comes from the contrast between the pale fibrous ground and the dark textual bands. The scale feels intimate and portable, closer to an object held in the hands than to a page made for display on a wall.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, stand back and take in the extreme length and narrowness of the leaf, then move in until the lines resolve into handwriting. Notice the two empty holes that interrupt the text without erasing it. The reading changes when you see that this is not a detached page, but part of a bundle once held together and carried.
ContextContexto
This is folio 116, verso, from a manuscript of the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, known as The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, a key Mahayana Buddhist text devoted to wisdom and emptiness. According to the source, it is dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat in the month of Ashvina, and is associated with Vikramashila Monastery in Bihar, eastern India, with painting linked to Kathmandu, Nepal. It is made with gum tempera and ink on palm leaf, although this side is dominated by writing. Its author is unknown, and the source offers no further description. It belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Pertenece al Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two round holes are not later damage: in palm-leaf manuscripts in the pothi format, openings like these allowed a cord to pass through and keep the loose leaves ordered and bound together.

I pause to listen to what this leaf tells me without words. I see a warm toasted beige support, with darker edges and plant fibers typical of palm leaf. Its surface is irregular and fragile, with small losses from age. I am struck by the three blocks of black writing separated by two circular binding holes. The ink shifts between deep black and brownish tones depending on absorption. It is an intimate object, made to be held in the hands and preserved with care.

When I look at this long and narrow leaf it reminds me of a night sky in miniature. The pale beige background is like a light milky way and on it the three blocks of dark text are ordered constellations. The two white holes look like small moons dividing the firmament into sections. I am fascinated that this folio 116 was written on September 14, 1119 and traveled from India and Nepal to today. It is a portable map of wisdom for finding direction, like the stars.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This leaf looks like a long strip for reading while lying on the floor. It is toasted cookie colored and has slightly wobbly and ragged edges because it is very old. The most curious thing is that it has two small round white holes that separate the writing into three equal parts, like three train cars. The tiny black letters are so many and placed very close together. I like to imagine someone writing them with great patience many many years ago.
