gum tempera and ink on palm leaves
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a long, narrow leaf seen straight on and horizontally, set against a very pale gray background that makes it stand out as a fragile, lightweight object. The palm leaf is a toasted beige, darker and more worn along its edges, with slightly irregular ends and small nicks that reveal its age. It spans almost the entire width of the image, yet its height is minimal, forcing the eye to move closer to appreciate the text. Three rectangular blocks of dense black writing run from left to right, separated by two small diamond-shaped holes, white inside, probably intended for the cord that bound the manuscript. Each block contains numerous horizontal lines of very small, tight, regular characters, drawn in ink across the fibrous, slightly glossy surface of the leaf. Although the text is illegible at this scale to those who do not know the language, its visual rhythm is clear: an almost musical texture of signs, pauses, and alignments. On the left edge there is a short vertical note; above, near the center, another tiny handwritten mark; and at the far right, a numbering can be seen. There are no figures, landscapes, or colored ornaments: all the visual power lies in the contrast between the light palm, the dark ink, and the patient repetition of the writing.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the leaf's extreme horizontal format and only then move closer to the three blocks of writing. Notice the two empty diamond-shaped holes: they interrupt the text, yet they explain how the book was bound. Finally, look at the worn edges to sense the age of the material.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 138, verso, from a manuscript of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, known as the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, an important Mahayana Buddhist text. It is dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat in the month of Ashvina. The source associates it with Vikramashila Monastery in Bihar, eastern India, and the painting with Kathmandu, Nepal. The author is unknown. It was made with gum tempera and ink on palm leaves. This folio shows only text, with no painted scene visible; the identity of the scribe is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two holes in the leaf were not decoration: in many South Asian palm-leaf manuscripts, a cord passed through them to keep the loose folios in order.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on how fragile this 1119 palm leaf is. Its toasted beige tone, darker at the chipped edges, shows time passing over a shiny, sensitive plant fiber. The black ink forms three dense, regular blocks, interrupted by two white diamond-shaped holes for the cord that bound the manuscript. I am struck by the foliation on the right end and the vertical marginal note on the left: human gestures that have survived for more than nine hundred years.

I see this long, narrow leaf as a night horizon. The three blocks of black writing are like constellations aligned from left to right, with two diamond-shaped gaps acting as pauses, like eclipses between stars. Even though I cannot read the characters, I sense their patient, repeated visual rhythm. Knowing it is folio 138 verso of a Buddhist sutra dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, makes me think about how we measure time, then with the Newar Samvat calendar and today with telescopes.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This leaf looks like a giant cookie-colored ruler, with little broken edges. It has three little rectangles full of tiny black letters, all squished together like ants in a line. In between there are two white diamond-shaped holes, like little windows for a string to tie the book together. There are no pictures, just letters and tiny numbers on the right edge. I like to imagine someone writing very carefully a very long time ago, without smudging anything.
