What you would seeLo que verías
A single horizontal leaf is shown, very long and narrow, photographed in full against a pale grey, almost white background. The leaf, in a warm beige with darker, slightly irregular edges, stretches across nearly the entire width of the image, leaving generous empty margins above and below that emphasize its elongated format. Across its surface are three dense blocks of black writing, separated by two small circular holes aligned near the vertical center. Each block is made up of tightly spaced horizontal lines in a fine, regular hand, with small characters that create an almost woven texture. The left and central blocks are wider; the right one is somewhat shorter and leaves brief notations visible in the upper and lower margins. Looked at calmly, the leaf shows wear at the ends, small stains, and the fibers and grain proper to palm leaf, along with subtle shifts in tone from pale yellow to toasted brown. The light is even and soft, without strong shadows, so attention falls on the contrast between the dark ink and the pale plant support. No figures, landscapes, or illustrations appear on this side: only text, blank spaces, and the two binding holes.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the whole leaf and its extreme horizontal format. Then look closely at the three blocks of writing and notice the regular rhythm of the lines. Finally, pause at the two round holes: they are not flaws, but part of how the book was held together, and they change this folio from an image into a working object.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is the front side (recto) of folio 177 from a manuscript of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, a central Mahayana Buddhist text devoted to transcendent wisdom. It is dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat calendar, in the month of Ashvina, and was made with gum tempera and ink on palm leaves. The source links it to Vikramashila Monastery in Bihar, in eastern India, and places the painting in Kathmandu, Nepal. Its author is unknown. The source does not say who commissioned it or trace the manuscript's full history before it reached the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two holes in the leaf were used to pass a cord through the folios and bind the manuscript; it is a practical feature of the pothi format, typical of South Asian palm-leaf books, not later damage.

I pause to consider how fragile this folio 177 is. It is a long and narrow palm leaf in a warm beige tone with darker edges and visible fibers. I see three dense blocks of black writing, with fine and regular ink, separated by two small circular binding holes. There is wear at the tips, tiny stains and natural veins from the plant support. It was made with gum tempera and ink, dated September 14, 1119. I wonder how it has survived so long without breaking apart.

What fascinates me is the very precise date of this leaf: Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat calendar, month of Ashvina. The text is the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, central to Mahayana Buddhism. It makes me think about how other cultures measure time with calendars different from ours. This recto side of folio 177 has no figures, only text, dark ink and two holes once used to tie the leaves together.

It looks like a super long cookie-colored strip, as if someone wrote lots of tiny black letters very close together. It has three groups of writing and two little round holes in the middle, like curious eyes. There are no drawings, just letters that look like a tiny woven blanket. I imagine threading a string through the holes so the leaves do not fly away. It says it is from the year 1119, so many years ago! I like that even though it is old and a bit spotty, you can still read it.

It is not paper, it is a natural leaf with fibers, veins and irregular edges used in 12th century manuscripts.
