What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from above against a dark gray background, with the right-hand page — folio 12, recto — almost fully visible and only a narrow strip of the preceding page at the left. The vellum is yellowish cream, with uneven edges, worn corners, and small purple and brown spots scattered mainly along the right margin and near the bottom. The surface is not flat: gentle undulations, slight creases, and a translucent vertical repair strip running down the right side can be made out. Nearly the whole leaf is covered with handwritten Greek in dark brown ink, arranged in dense, regular lines that leave generous margins. At the top is a heading in more decorative lettering; further down, a second section begins with a large initial in red and several words also picked out in that color, while the left and lower margins carry marks, letters, and notes in red and brown ink. The first letter of the main text, at the left, projects into the margin. The light is soft and even, without strong reflections, revealing the fibrous texture of the vellum and the irregular upper edge, where other leaves show behind it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the overall block of writing and then move toward the red marks in the margins, where a second level of reading becomes visible. Notice the gap between the first section and the one that starts halfway down the page. That pause, together with the repaired strip on the right, changes the page from a simple surface of text into an object that has been used, kept, and cared for.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is folio 12 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author. It is executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, and it contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek. Each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the immortality of the soul, and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. The sophistication of the work suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople; it is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the volume is described as illuminated with gold, this particular page is almost entirely handwritten text: the richest decoration was concentrated at the openings of each Gospel, so splendor and everyday reading coexist within the same book.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the reading of a sacred text change when commentary and main text share the same page?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de un texto sagrado cuando el comentario y el texto principal comparten la misma página?
  2. What do the wear, stains, and repairs tell us about the life of this book over nine centuries?¿Qué nos dicen el desgaste, las manchas y las reparaciones sobre la vida de este libro a lo largo de nueve siglos?
  3. Why concentrate gold and images at the openings of each Gospel and leave other pages almost entirely to handwriting?¿Por qué concentrar el oro y las imágenes en las aperturas de cada evangelio y dejar otras páginas casi solo a la escritura?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has left on the vellum. The yellowish cream tone shows purple and brownish spots, especially on the right margin and near the bottom, and the edges look irregular and worn. I see soft undulations and a vertical translucent restoration strip running along the right side from top to bottom. The dark brown ink of the Greek script contrasts with the red touches of the large initial and the marginal notes. It moves me that the fibrous texture is still visible under soft even light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like an ordered sky. The dense and regular lines of Greek writing in dark brown ink move like parallel orbits over the yellowish cream background of the parchment. At the top there is a heading with more decorative letters, like a constellation marking the start. Lower down, the large initial in red stands out like a bright star and the notes in red and brown in the margins look like annotations on the edge of a sky map. Everything is photographed from above with even light and no harsh glare.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very very old book opened on a gray table. The sheet on the right is almost fully visible and is cookie-cream colored, with little purple and brown spots and wiggly uneven edges. Almost the whole page is filled with little brown letters I do not understand because they are in Greek, lined up very straight in rows. At the top there is a pretty heading and lower down a big red letter that really catches your eye, with other small red words. On the right side you can see a see-through strip protecting it.

What color is the parchment with the Greek writing and what vertical strip runs along its right side?

    HintPista

It is a light tone like old vellum and on the right there is a lighter vertical band going from top to bottom.
