What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an old open book, seen from above against a plain gray background. The left page, folio 15 verso, fills almost the entire frame; on the right only a narrow strip of the next page is visible. The support is aged cream-colored vellum, with uneven edges, worn corners, brownish stains, and small purplish spots, especially near the top and bottom. Along the left side you can see the dark spine and the thickness of many stacked leaves. The text, in Greek, is arranged in three main blocks separated by blank spaces. It is written in small, dense, flowing lettering, mainly in dark brown ink. Three larger initials stand out at the beginnings of sections —a T at the top, a rounded letter at mid-left, and another angular initial lower down— drawn in reddish ink and extending slightly into the margin. Between and above the blocks there is smaller, tighter writing, like notes or commentary fitted around the main text. Two small circular marks appear in the right margin. The light is even and soft, revealing the slightly rough, matte surface of the vellum, its creases, discoloration, and the hand-made irregularity of a page meant to be read slowly, at close range.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the three large initials from top to bottom: they organize the page before you read a single word. Then look closely at the smaller writing squeezed between the main blocks, and notice how commentary surrounds and accompanies the sacred text. Finally, examine the stains, spots and worn edges: the passage of time is also part of what you are seeing.

ContextContexto

This is folio 15 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author. According to the source, the volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts and is bound in leather, using ink, tempera and gold on vellum. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks —symbols of the soul's immortality— and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page shows mainly text, not one of those openings. Its refinement suggests it was probably copied and decorated in a Constantinopolitan monastery, although that is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: although the source mentions gold and tempera in the volume as a whole, this folio impresses through restraint —brown ink, discreet red initials and aged vellum— without large images or golden backgrounds.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what speaks to me most: the aged cream-colored vellum with irregular edges, brownish stains and tiny purplish dots. I see the dark spine and the thickness of the 428 leaves that make up this volume. I am drawn to the three reddish initials that stick out into the margin, made with tempera, and the contrast between the brown ink of the main text and the smaller, tighter script that surrounds it as commentary. It is work on skin, ink and gold made to last. Every fold and discoloration tells how it has been opened and read for centuries.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From my perspective, this page is like an ordered sky. The Greek text is arranged in three main blocks separated by blank space, like constellations on the cream background of the vellum. The three reddish initials work as guide stars marking where to start reading. Around them, the tiny commentary orbits the central text, just like notes in the margin of a sky chart. This is not one of the illuminated openings with peacocks and fountains, but a zone for slow reading. It reminds me that in Byzantium, around 1000–1100, visual order was also a form of orientation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old book that someone opened very carefully. The page is cookie-colored with little brown and purplish spots at the top and bottom. It has lots of tiny brown letters I cannot understand because they are in Greek, in three separate groups. What I like most are the three big reddish letters that stick out toward the edge, as if they want to wave hello. Around them there are even tinier, tighter little letters. On the right side I see two little circles on the border and on the other side just a sliver of the next page peeks through. You can tell it is soft but a bit wrinkly.
