What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is shown from slightly above, against a dark gray background. The right-hand page, the main focus, is a sheet of vellum in a warm cream tone, aged, with wavy, slightly darkened edges and a brittle, matte texture. In the upper right corner the number '19' is handwritten, beside purple stains and wear that climb up the edge. Part of the facing page is visible on the left, cropped by the frame. The text, in Greek, is arranged in blocks of different sizes: fine, dense lines in brown ink at the top and bottom, and a central section in larger, thicker, darker letters that immediately draws the eye. Small decorated initials and letters touched with red punctuate the beginnings of sections along the margins, accompanied by small brownish-orange spots. The margins are wide and mostly empty, especially at the bottom, giving the writing air. The light is soft and even, with no harsh shadows, and reveals the irregular surface of the vellum, slight folds at the corners, and the thin stack of pages visible at the upper and right edges. There are no human figures; the protagonist is the handwriting itself.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the larger, darker central block and notice how it stands out from the finer writing around it. Then look at the margins: the small initials, reddened letters, and stains show that the hierarchy of the text is also visual. The number '19' in the upper corner returns this sacred page to the practical order of a book meant to be consulted.
ContextContexto
This is folio 19 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author in Byzantium around 1000-1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the soul's immortality, and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, though that origin is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso
On the illuminated opening pages of this same volume, peacocks are not mere decoration: in Byzantine Christian symbolism they represented the immortality of the soul.

Look at this warm cream vellum, with wavy edges darkened by time. I pause on its matte, fragile surface, those soft corner folds and brownish orange stains that speak of age. Notice the hierarchy in brown ink: dense blocks at top and bottom and, in the center, larger, darker letters that guide the eye. The number 19 at the upper right, small initials touched with red, and generous margins complete a page designed to breathe and to last.

As when I hunt for constellations, here the eye also follows a hierarchy. The large, bold letters in the center are like bright stars that catch attention first, while the fine lines are the starry background. That handwritten 19 in the corner is our coordinate. The touches of red work as markers, as if telling where to pause the telescope. And the empty margins are the dark sky that lets the light of the ink breathe.

This book is huge and super old! Its page looks like a light cookie with crinkly edges and little spots. At the top it says 19 handwritten. There are tiny brown letters and, in the middle, big bold letters shouting look at me first! There are also little letters painted red like tiny flags. There are no people drawings, just pretty letters. I like that it leaves lots of white space at the bottom, as if the page wants to rest.
Arriba dice 19 escrito a mano.
