What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open book photographed from a slightly elevated angle against a neutral gray background. In the foreground, the left-hand page dominates the frame: a sheet of aged vellum in warm ivory turning to deeper cream and light tan toward the edges. Its matte surface shows gentle cockling, faint brown foxing spots and small stains near the upper right corner, with a translucent reinforcing strip along the inner margin near the gutter. The spine edge on the left reveals the thickness of the volume and a darkened, worn leather binding. Dense Greek minuscule script in reddish-brown ink fills most of the page, arranged in two main text blocks with slightly enlarged initial letters marking new sections. The hand is regular yet clearly handwritten, with ligatures, abbreviations and subtle variations in stroke weight. Even, diffuse lighting reveals the fibrous texture of the parchment and soft shadows along the book's bulk. In the background, the facing right-hand page appears mostly blank and out of focus, emphasizing the materiality and age of the inscribed folio in the foreground.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the overall grid of brown script against the pale, mottled vellum and notice how the two text blocks are organized. Look closely at the enlarged initials, the ink color shifts and the signs of age like stains and the reinforced gutter. Then consider how this restrained, scholarly page would feel alongside the book's richly gilded opening pages with peacocks and fountains.
ContextContexto
This is folio 21 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to about 1000–1100, attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding, and the full volume comprises 428 leaves with texts in Greek. According to the source, each gospel opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author together with birds — principally peacocks, symbols of immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its high level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The maker is unknown. The view shown is a text-only page, without the illuminated decoration found elsewhere in the manuscript.

Curious detailDato curioso
While this folio shows only brown ink text, other pages in the same 428-leaf manuscript open with brilliant gold and tempera illuminations featuring peacocks and fountains, classic Byzantine symbols of eternal life.

I pause on what time has left on the vellum. That warm ivory darkening toward the edges, the brownish damp stains and the tiny losses at the corner tell how this book breathed for a thousand years. The reddish brown ink remains steady, with rubricated initials marking the rhythm of reading. Notice the pale strip reinforcing the left margin and the worn leather of the spine: gestures of care, attempts to preserve an object made to endure. Every wrinkle is a story of monastic use.

I see this page as an ordered sky. The Byzantine minuscule forms constellations of regular lines on ivory parchment, like stars aligned with patience. The enlarged initials are like brighter stars guiding the eye between two blocks of text. I am struck by the soft even light that reveals the texture of the support, with no glare, just like observing through a telescope on a clear night. It is a portable universe from the eleventh century, made in Constantinople to orient reading.

This book looks old and wrinkly like my grandma's skin. It is open and has lots of little brown letters I cannot understand because they are in Greek, all packed together in neat lines. The edges look more yellowish with little spots, and on the left side you can see its dark leather spine. I like to imagine someone wrote it by hand very calmly, a very long time ago, and that little white strip on the edge is like a band-aid to keep it from tearing.
