The image shows an open book photographed from above against a plain, dark grey background. The right-hand page, complete and dominant, is folio 31 recto; at left only a narrow strip of the previous page is visible, cut off by the edge of the photograph. The support is vellum in an aged ivory tone, with uneven edges, slightly rounded corners, and scattered brown stains. In the upper right corner is the number '31', written faintly in pencil or pale ink. The text, in Greek and in brown ink that fades in places to a reddish tone, fills most of the page. In the upper half is a block of small, cursive, very tightly packed writing, about twenty-three long lines. Below it, after a short break, begins another block of about nine lines in noticeably larger, bolder, more widely spaced letters; its first letter, at left, is an enlarged initial that stands out. The handwriting leans slightly and leaves generous margins, especially at the bottom. Looked at slowly, the page reveals horizontal creases in the lower right third, small stains showing through from the other side, signs of handling along the margins, and the soft shadow of the binding at the center fold. The light is even and diffuse: there is no gleam of gold here, only the matte, gently undulating texture of parchment.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the contrast between the two blocks of writing: the small, dense script above and the large, spaced letters below. Then move to the margins and notice the stains, creases, and the faint '31' at the top. That wear changes the reading: this is not a pristine image, but a working book handled for centuries.
ContextContexto
This is folio 31 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantine Constantinople around 1000–1100 by an unknown maker. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with Greek text, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, for the fountain of life and the soul's salvation. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a Constantinopolitan monastery. This particular page is almost entirely text, without illumination.

Come closer and you will see this is not smooth paper, it is aged ivory vellum, slightly wavy, with scattered brown spots and soft horizontal creases on the lower right. I focus on the two scripts: on top a dense block of about twenty-three tight small lines in brown ink fading to reddish, below nine lines in a much larger, airier hand with an enlarged initial on the left. At the center you can see the soft shadow of the binding. It is a lived-in page, full of traces of use and time.

This page reminds me of watching the sky without a telescope, patiently. There is no gold, no birds, no fountains here, just Greek text on a dark gray background that makes the ivory parchment glow. On top the tiny crowded lines look like a distant constellation, below the large spaced lines feel like an invitation to breathe slowly. The small number 31 at the upper right is like a quiet coordinate. It is silence, even light, and monastic time paused for contemplation.

It looks like a giant open book left half in the photo so you only see a thin strip of the other page. The sheet looks old, like a cookie color with little spots. The funny part is there are two kinds of letters: on top lots of tiny crowded letters like ants in a line, and below big letters with lots of space and a bigger starting letter on the left. At the corner it says 31. I imagine someone wrote it all by hand very slowly and carefully.

On this page with no golden decoration, how many text blocks do you see and which one has the smaller script, the top or the bottom?
HintPista
Look at the upper half and the lower half: one looks very dense and the other more airy with a large initial.
#2
Look carefully at the upper right corner of the full page: what folio number written in faint ink appears there?
HintPista
It is a small number in faint pencil or ink near the edge, on the ivory parchment.

If you observe the material, what color is the parchment and what traces of time can you find on its edges and surface?
HintPista
Notice the light cookie-like tone and the little spots and wrinkles, especially at the bottom right.
