What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is seen from a slightly elevated angle, displaying a single parchment page with a warm, yellowed tone and rich texture. In the foreground, the right-hand folio dominates, its edges uneven, frayed and darkened to a toasted brown by age. The vellum surface shows foxing, tiny holes, yellowish speckles and damp stains, including a dark purplish blot near the lower center and two reddish-brown marks along the sides. The text, in Greek written with dark brown ink in a dense, small minuscule cursive, covers most of the page in two sections: a short heading at the top separated by a faint line, and a main block of about twenty closely spaced lines. A few enlarged initials are touched with reddish orange. In the background, on the left, the thick edge of the book block is visible, with layered, irregular page edges, while on the right the next folio is barely glimpsed. Even, soft lighting emphasizes the roughness of the parchment against the fluidity of the ink, giving a sense of intimate scale and careful manual work.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the worn edge of the parchment to sense its age, then focus on the dense field of Greek script. Notice the small colored stains and the highlighted initials that punctuate the reading and reveal centuries of human use.
ContextContexto
This image shows folio 34 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated circa 1000–1100, from Byzantium, Constantinople. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the complete volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts, made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. Each of the four gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author together with birds — chiefly peacocks, symbols of the soul’s immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. Its high level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The folio shown here is a text page with commentary, rather than one of the illuminated openings, typical of the exegetical nature of the manuscript.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this folio shows only text, the same volume contains pages with borders illuminated in gold and tempera where peacocks appear as a Christian symbol of immortality, linked to the belief that their flesh did not decay.

What moves me is the skin of the parchment, that yellowish vellum with toasted, rough edges that speaks of time and use. I see the yellow spots, the tiny holes, the purple stain in the center and the two reddish ones on the sides like scars left by humidity. I notice the dark brown ink, tight and dense, with initials in reddish orange barely breathing through the texture. I imagine the care this folio would need to stabilize without erasing its history. It is a fragile and beautiful witness.

It amazes me to think this folio was written between 1000 and 1100 in Constantinople, when we looked at the same sky without telescopes. This complete book has 428 leaves in Greek, and each Gospel begins with peacocks and fountains illuminated in gold, although here we only see text and commentary. I picture monks copying by candlelight, guided by seasons and feasts of the liturgical calendar. This page, with its tiny, cramped calligraphy, is like a map of the ordered universe of Byzantium.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a very old and wrinkled book, like dried peach skin. It has brownish edges and little stains everywhere, a big purple one at the bottom and two reddish ones on the sides. The letters are tiny and all huddled together in two parts, a short one on top and a long one below. Some letters start with a pretty orange color. I imagine someone wrote it very patiently many, many years ago and that you have to open it very carefully so you do not tear it.
