What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is photographed from directly above against a plain gray ground, its left-hand page - the verso of folio 54 - filling almost the entire frame. Only a sliver of the following page appears at right, while the left edge reveals the thickness of earlier leaves and a hint of the binding. The vellum is creamy and yellowed, with darkened edges, small brown spots, and a slightly uneven, porous surface. A vertical strip of transparent tape, fastened along the inner margin, catches the light differently from the matte parchment around it. Greek handwriting is arranged in three blocks. Above and below, commentary is written in small, tightly packed lines; between them sits the main text in larger, darker, more widely spaced characters. Ink ranges from deep brown to a reddish tone, with some strokes faded and others more strongly marked. One large initial in reddish ochre, set slightly apart at the left of the central block, draws the eye. No figures or gold are visible on this page. The broad empty lower margin, a stain midway down the right side, and another mark near the lower left quietly register centuries of handling.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the large central block, where the breathing room between lines makes the main text stand out. Then move to the smaller writing above and below to feel the layering of reading. Finally, look at the tape, stains, and darkened edges: they shift the page from sacred text to a physical object that has survived through handling.

ContextContexto

This is folio 54 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, in Constantinople, around 1000-1100, by an unknown maker. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes a volume of 428 leaves written in Greek, produced in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum with a leather binding. According to the source, each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, along with peacocks (symbols of the soul's immortality) and fountains (the fountain of life and salvation). Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. This particular page, however, shows text and commentary rather than illumination. Its exact scribe is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this page is written in ink without visible gold or pictures, the same volume runs to 428 leaves of vellum, and its Gospel openings were illuminated with peacocks and fountains as symbols of immortality and salvation.

  2. How do the tape and stains alter your sense of this page: as damage, as care, or as part of its biography?¿La cinta transparente y las manchas se leen como daño, como cuidado o como parte de la biografía de la página?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at what time has left on this folio 54 verso. I see the yellowish cream parchment with darkened edges, brownish stains and the porous texture of the material. I notice the vertical transparent tape near the inner margin, its shine different from the matte parchment, evidence of a later repair. Above and below the small, dense commentary frames the larger, darker central text, in brown and reddish ink with an ochre-reddish initial on the left. No gold here, just use.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

My gaze looks for constellations on the page. I see three blocks of Greek text like three bands of sky: above and below a small, dense commentary, in the center a larger, darker and more spaced script, like main stars. The ochre-reddish initial on the left is like a guiding star marking the beginning. The smooth gray background under the open book reminds me of emptiness, and the yellowish cream parchment with its brownish stains looks like an ancient, porous lunar surface marked by centuries.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and open as if someone were reading it from above. The page is yellowish cream with little brown stains and dark edges, and it looks a bit bumpy even in a photo. I notice the transparent tape stuck on one side that shines differently. There are lots of little letters in Greek, some tiny on top and bottom and bigger ones in the middle. On the left there is a large ochre-reddish letter that looks like the captain of the line.
