What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open page of an ancient bound book, photographed from a slight top angle with the spine on the left and the fore-edge on the right revealing a thick stack of yellowed leaves. The leaf is vellum in a warm ivory tone, with uneven, darkened edges, soft brown foxing and water stains, and gentle cockling that reveals its organic nature and great age. Most of the surface is covered by a dense block of handwritten Greek text in reddish-brown ink, arranged in very even horizontal lines in a fluid minuscule script full of tiny ligatures and abbreviations. At the top, a heading in slightly larger and darker lettering marks a new section. In the upper right corner the number 72 is lightly written in pencil. Toward the lower third, two lines with somewhat larger and more spaced initial letters stand out within the paragraph. The lighting is soft and even, without harsh shadows, allowing the viewer to appreciate the velvety texture of the parchment, the subtle sheen of the ink, and the delicate variations in pressure from the scribe’s hand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the whole: the dense, rhythmic lines of handwriting and the warm tone of the vellum. Then find the heading at the top and the number 72 in the corner, and linger on the stains and cockling of the parchment, which tell the material history of the book beyond the words.
ContextContexto
This leaf belongs to a Gospel Book with Commentaries of 428 folios with Greek texts, dated to ca. 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, probably made and decorated in a monastery there judging by its sophistication. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. According to source data, each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author, birds — chiefly peacocks as symbols of immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life. This folio 72 is a page of continuous text and commentary without such figural illumination, and it is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
While this folio shows only text, the same volume contains opening pages richly illuminated with gold, peacocks and fountains, Byzantine motifs that link the book’s beauty to ideas of eternal life and salvation.

The conservatorLa restauradora
Look closely at this warm ivory vellum, with its uneven edges and brownish humidity stains. Every ripple and every yellowed tone on the fore edge speaks of a thousand years of life. Notice the reddish brown ink of the Greek text, so regular and fluid, and the darker heading at the top. As a restorer I am struck by the velvety texture of the parchment and how it still holds the faint sheen of ink. This folio 72 has no gold or illumination, but its patina is its history.

To me this folio is like an orderly sky. The horizontal lines of tiny Greek minuscule move like regular orbits, with little ligatures like constellations. At the top, the darker heading marks a new cycle, like a brighter star. And in the upper right corner, that 72 in pencil, added centuries later, is our coordinate to locate it among the book's 428 folios. A sober page, without peacocks or fountains of life, but essential for navigating the whole.

This book looks very old and wrinkly, like it got little spots from getting wet in the rain. It has so many tiny brown letters someone wrote by hand, without making mistakes! They are all lined up in straight rows, like ants in formation. At the top there is a title with darker letters and in the corner it says 72 in pencil, like when I mark my page. There are no pretty bird drawings here, just reading, but I like to imagine the monk writing very slowly.
