What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single open page of a medieval bound volume, viewed straight on with a slight angle that reveals the thickness of the pages and the spine on the left. The leaf is vellum, its surface a warm ivory turning to ochre and light brown along the aged, slightly wavy edges, with darker foxing and stains, most noticeably a faded reddish and bluish smear across the top margin and brown spots at the lower right. Arranged on the matte, subtly wrinkled parchment are two blocks of handwritten text in deep brown ink applied with a reed or quill. The upper block uses a larger, more formal and well-spaced script of about twelve centered lines, while the lower block, set apart by a narrow gap, is smaller, tighter and denser, with about fifteen lines filling the width. Greek diacritics and abbreviation marks are visible throughout. No illumination or gold appears on this side. Even, soft lighting discloses the fibrous texture of the skin, gentle cockling, the worn leather binding, and a faint shadow cast against a neutral gray background. Variations in ink density — some strokes bold, others faint — record the hand and rhythm of the scribe.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the contrast between the larger upper script and the denser, smaller commentary below. Move your attention to the stains, discoloration and cockling of the vellum that speak to its age and use. Notice the steadiness of the hand and how the ink settles into the uneven skin surface.
ContextContexto
This is folio 72 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to about 1000–1100 and assigned to Byzantium, Constantinople. The recorded medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding, and the complete volume holds 428 leaves with texts in Greek. According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders portraying its author along with birds — chiefly peacocks, symbols of the soul's immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. The manuscript's high level of sophistication suggests it was probably made and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. This particular folio does not display that illumination, showing only script and commentary.

Curious detailDato curioso
While this folio shows only ink, other openings in the same 428-leaf Greek manuscript are richly illuminated with peacocks and fountains, long-standing Byzantine symbols of eternal life, executed in tempera and gold on vellum.

If you look closely you will see this leaf is not paper but vellum, skin prepared more than a thousand years ago in Constantinople. Its yellowish ivory tone is stained and rippled, with darkened edges from time and from hands that have touched it. Notice the two scripts in brown ink: on top large and spaced letters, below a tiny and very dense script. They are the Gospel text and its commentary. I love how the ink is sometimes heavy and sometimes faded, a direct trace of the scribe's reed pen.

This folio is like a sky with two constellations of text. At the top, about twelve broad and orderly lines, like bright stars set apart. Below, some fifteen dense and crowded lines, like a compact star cluster. Everything is written in Greek with brown ink on ivory-colored vellum. This page has no gold or peacocks here, those are at the start of each Gospel. It makes me think about how monks layered knowledge, just as we organize maps of the universe to understand it better.

It looks like homework from someone who wrote a lot by hand and did not want to go off the page. On top the letters are big with space between lines, below they are tiny and squeezed as if trying to tell a long secret. The leaf is cookie-colored with brown spots and a small reddish stain on top. On the left you can see the thick leather spine of the book, which has 428 pages in total. Can you imagine writing all that without erasing or using a pencil?
