What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from above, almost filling the frame against a flat, dark grey-green background. The focus is the right-hand page, a sheet of vellum in warm cream and pale beige tones, with slightly darkened, uneven edges, gentle undulations, and small stains that reveal its age. Only a sliver of the facing page is visible at the right. At the left, the thickness of the bound volume can be seen in a stack of stacked leaves in ochre and tan shades; at the lower left corner a hint of the dark binding appears. The writing, in Greek, is arranged in two distinct blocks in reddish-brown ink. The upper block is written in smaller, denser script, with about twenty-two tight lines; below, after a short gap, the lettering becomes larger, rounder, and more widely spaced, in about eleven lines. Wide margins surround the text, especially at the left and bottom. Fine horizontal ruling lines, now barely visible, organize the writing. At the top there is a faded heading and weak show-through from the other side of the leaf. Here and there are small purple and brown marks, creases, and translucent areas in the vellum. The light is even and soft, without harsh shadows, emphasizing the matte, slightly rough texture of the animal skin and the quiet contrast between the pale page and the dark ground.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the shift in handwriting halfway down the page: the reading changes rhythm there. Then look at the margins, stains, and faint show-through at the top; they turn an apparently plain page into a record of material age and repeated handling.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 73 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author around 1000–1100 in Byzantium, Constantinople. It uses ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, and contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek. The source explains that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks —symbols of the soul’s immortality— and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The sophistication of the work suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The identity of the scribe and its exact early history are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this folio looks austere, the same volume opens each Gospel with luminous illumination in gold and tempera, featuring peacocks and fountains as symbols of immortality and salvation.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what many overlook at first glance and what the record describes so carefully. That creamy warm beige vellum with darkened edges, gentle waves and small stains speaks of a thousand years of life. I love the contrast between the two blocks of reddish brown ink: above twenty two small tight lines, below eleven larger rounder ones, with wide margins and faint ruling lines. The even light reveals the matte rough texture of the skin, the purple marks and the barely visible dark binding.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this folio 73 verso from a Gospel book made around 1000-1100 in Constantinople I think of deep time. This 428 leaf book in Greek is like a sky copied by hand over years in a monastery. I am intrigued by its two different scripts on the same page, like two constellations with different densities: above the dense continuous text, below the more spaced commentary. Although we do not see the gold or the illuminated peacocks and fountains mentioned in the record here, I know they are on other pages like guiding stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and very important, as if it has lived for so many years. I like that it is open and you can see lots of little ochre colored pages piled up on the left, like a giant paper sandwich. The page on the right is creamy with spots and full of little Greek letters written in reddish brown ink. On top there are many tiny close lines and below the letters are bigger and more separated, as if someone wanted to write prettier and with more air. It has lots of empty space around the writing.

  1. #1

According to what is visible in the record, what color is the ink used for the Greek text on the vellum?

    HintPista

Look at the warm tone of the letters in both writing blocks, it is not pure black.

  2. #2

If you count the text blocks on the main page, how many lines does the tighter upper block have and how many does the larger lower block have?

    HintPista

Notice the difference in size and spacing between the upper and lower writing.

  3. #3

In the photo of the open book, what barely peeks out in the lower left corner next to the edge of stacked pages?

    HintPista

Look at the edge where the ochre and toasted pages end, there is something dark.
