What you would seeLo que verías
An open bound volume is seen from above, almost filling the frame against a flat, dark gray-green background. Only the left page is fully visible; the right page is cut off by the edge. The support is vellum of a warm ivory color, yellowed and slightly wavy, with soft shadows along the bottom edge and the gutter. On the left, the stacked fore-edges of many thin leaves and a glimpse of dark binding suggest a thick, heavy book. The page holds Greek text in brown and reddish ink, organized in three blocks: a block of small, dense script in the upper half, a central block in larger, more widely spaced letters, and a few lines of small script below. Slightly protruding decorated initials mark the beginnings of sections in the left margin. In the upper margin there is a wide, faded heading, now a diffuse brownish stain with illegible forms, as if pigment or gold had worn away. Small brown spots, finger-like stains at the sides, fine wrinkles, pores, and darkened areas along the edges reveal age and use. The light is even and soft, without harsh glare, allowing the fibrous texture of the parchment and the irregular hand of the scribes to be appreciated. No figures or scenes appear on this folio: the protagonist is writing itself.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the texture of the vellum and the even rhythm of the handwriting, then compare the large central script with the smaller commentary around it. Notice the faded heading at the top and the stained spots in the margins: they shift the page from an abstract text to an object handled, read, and preserved for centuries.
ContextContexto
This is folio 76 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000-1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks—symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The author is unknown, and it is not known exactly which monastery produced it.

- How does the relationship between the larger text and the smaller commentary change the way a sacred text is read?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de un texto sagrado cuando conviven una escritura principal grande y un comentario menor alrededor?
- What can the stains, fading, and wear tell us about the people who used this book?¿Qué pueden contarnos las manchas, el desgaste y lo desvanecido sobre las personas que usaron este libro?

I linger on the warm ivory vellum, yellowed and gently rippled, with pores, fine wrinkles and edges darkened by time. I see brown and reddish ink in three blocks of Greek writing and that faded header on top, now a diffuse brown stain where pigment was lost. I am moved by the small brown spots and the lateral marks left by fingers and constant use. Soft light reveals the parchment fiber and the uneven hand, a living support that has endured for a thousand years.

I see this folio like an ordered sky: three constellations of Greek text on an ivory background. The central block in larger letters is like bright stars, the upper dense block like a thick Milky Way. There are no images here, only writing, but I know from the context that the full book of 428 leaves holds illuminations with peacocks and fountains, symbols of immortality and salvation. That erased header reminds me of a faded nebula, light that once existed and today is barely perceived.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a very very old notebook, thick and heavy, with many thin little pages stacked on the left. The page is cookie cream in color and has little letters in another language I do not understand, some big and some tiny and cramped. At the top there is a big brown stain that looks erased. It has little spots and wrinkles as if many hands had touched it. It has no drawings, only letters, but I like to imagine it is a secret treasure from a thousand years ago.

Look at how the letter size changes: tiny and tight at the top, large and spaced in the middle, and a few smaller lines at the bottom.

It is not pure white, it is a creamy color like old vellum lit with even light.
