What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from above, almost filling the frame against a smooth, muted gray-green background. The main page occupies the center and right; on the left, the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible, while only a narrow strip of the facing page appears on the right. The vellum is a warm, aged cream, with slightly irregular edges, brownish stains, and areas darkened by time, especially near the top. A translucent vertical strip runs along the inner margin, probably a modern conservation support. The writing fills most of the page in three blocks. At the top and bottom, a small, dense Greek script in reddish-brown ink forms long, compact lines. In the center, the text becomes larger, darker, and more widely spaced, creating a strong visual pause. A large initial letter projects to the left of that central block, surrounded by a brown halo of wear or staining. The letterforms are fluid, linked, and full of abbreviations and small hooks. The light is even and soft, revealing the slightly undulating surface of the vellum without harsh shadows. The overall impression is of a quiet, fragile page whose beauty comes from the rhythm of handwriting.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the contrast between the large central text and the smaller writing surrounding it, as if one voice were speaking inside another. Then move closer to the enlarged initial on the left and to the stains around it. Those worn marks change the page: it is not only an object for reading, but also evidence of centuries of handling, study, and preservation.

ContextContexto

This is folio 81, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source explains that each of the four Gospels opens with illuminated borders showing its author, birds—mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The author is unknown. This particular page is mainly textual, so those illuminations are not visible here.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what time has done to this warm cream vellum. I see brownish stains, slightly irregular edges and that soft waviness left by skin worked centuries ago. I am very interested in the translucent vertical band by the inner margin, a modern conservation support that holds the leaf without covering the script. The reddish brown ink of the small blocks and the darker ink of the center have aged differently. Even the brown halo around the initial tells me of old damp or handling.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this page is like a sky with constellations. At the top and bottom there are dense tiny lines, like tightly packed stars, and in the middle a wider space with large spaced letters, as if a milky way crosses the leaf. The prominent initial on the left is like a guide star that shows where to look. I like to imagine the scribe copying with patience, night after night, like someone charting the sky in a monastery, seeking order amid immensity.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant book that fills almost the whole photo and it is very very old. On the left you can see many little leaves stacked like a tall sandwich. The page is creamy with light brown spots and it looks a bit wrinkly. There are three groups of funny letters I cannot read, two with tiny writing and one in the middle with bigger darker letters. There is a special bigger letter at the start with a stain around it. I like it because it feels quiet, as if everyone is silent so they do not wake it up.

It is not a page, it is the edge where all the other leaves are stacked together.
