What you would seeLo que verías
An open book is photographed from above against a neutral gray ground, filling almost the entire frame. Only the left page — the verso of folio 85 — is fully visible, with a narrow strip of the following page at right. At left, the thickness of the volume is evident: many cream-colored vellum leaves, slightly wavy, their edges darkened by age, with traces of a worn, dark leather binding. The page surface looks matte, porous, and uneven, with brown stains, yellowed patches, and small marks of handling. Near the top is a very faded heading in pinkish ink. Below it are two blocks of handwritten Greek. The upper block, in larger, more spacious lettering in reddish-brown ink, occupies about a third of the leaf. After a short gap, and a small decorated initial in the left margin, the lower block begins: a much smaller, denser, tightly packed hand that fills another third of the page and leaves a broad blank margin below. Subtle creases run across the vellum, including a diagonal wrinkle near the lower-left corner, and two small sewing holes appear along the right edge. There are no figures on this page — only the quiet rhythm between main text and commentary.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First notice how empty this page feels compared with the illuminated openings described by the museum: here, the work is done by handwriting alone. Then compare the two blocks of script and follow the change in scale from the Gospel text to its commentary. A small decorated initial on the left marks the transition.
ContextContexto
This is folio 85 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. The unknown makers used ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves written in Greek. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks — symbols of the soul’s immortality — and fountains, images of the fountain of life and salvation. This particular page is mostly text, so its decoration is restrained.

Curious detailDato curioso
This book contains 428 vellum leaves. In the illuminated Gospel openings elsewhere in the volume, peacocks were not merely decorative: for Byzantine readers they signified the immortality of the soul.

I focus on what the material reveals. The cream-colored vellum is wavy, with darkened edges and brownish stains that speak of a thousand years of use. At the top you can see a very faded pinkish heading and then two blocks of Greek: the upper one with large letters in reddish brown ink and the lower one with small, dense calligraphy. Below there is a wide blank margin. I notice soft folds, a diagonal crease, and two sewing holes. It is a page without figures, made for close reading.

This page looks to me like a map of textual constellations. At the top, the faded heading is like a pale horizon. The upper block, with large spaced letters, feels like bright scattered stars. After a pause and an initial in the margin, the lower block appears as a dense, tight cluster covering another third of the leaf. It all leaves a large empty lower margin, like night sky waiting to be filled. There are no figures here, only rhythm, pause, and density on porous vellum.

This book is very old and it is open as if someone left it while reading. You can see the left page clearly and just a little strip of the other one. The leaf is cream colored with little brown spots and it is a bit wrinkly. At the top there are big spaced letters and below many tiny letters packed together, all in Greek. I like that it leaves a lot of white space at the bottom, like room to breathe. There are no little drawings, just letters, a pretty initial, and two tiny holes where it is sewn.
