What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open book seen from above and slightly from the front, with the right-hand page — folio 87, recto — filling almost the entire frame. Against a dark gray background barely visible at the corners, the vellum is an uneven yellowish ivory, its edges darkened by age and its corners softly rounded. At the left, a narrow strip of the preceding page appears, with traces of writing and a small stain or initial near the lower edge. The Greek text is handwritten in brown ink, in dense, regular lines forming a single rectangular block across the upper and central part of the leaf. The script is small, slanted, and continuous, with abbreviations and accents; some words or passages stand out in a redder ink, especially toward the final lines. At the top, a heading is badly faded, little more than a horizontal pinkish-orange smudge where decoration or ink has worn away. In the upper right corner, written faintly in pencil or pale ink, is the number “87.” The margins are wide and nearly empty, with faint stains, dark specks, and signs of use. On the right, the thickness of the volume is visible, many leaves stacked with slightly irregular edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the whole page as an object: the wide, quiet margins framing a dense block of writing. Then move up to the faded heading and across to the handwritten “87,” signs of time and later handling. Finally, look closely at the last lines, where the ink turns redder and the reading changes pace.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a page from a Gospel Book with commentaries, by an unknown maker, dated to about 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, probably to a monastery in Constantinople. Now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek and was made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — chiefly peacocks, symbols of the soul’s immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life and salvation. This page, by contrast, is mainly textual; who wrote it, and for exactly which community, is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual detail: after roughly a thousand years, the main text is still fairly legible, while the heading at the top has faded into a faint pinkish stain.

I pause on the yellowish ivory tone of the vellum and its darkened edges, with softly rounded corners. I see the dense block of writing in brown ink, with accents and abbreviations, plus touches of reddish ink near the bottom. At the top, the faded header in pinkish and orangey tones speaks of time passing. I notice the stains, the dark specks and the thickness of the stacked leaves on the right: they are traces of use, of hands and centuries that we must preserve without erasing their history.

Like someone watching a constellation, I see here an orderly rectangle of Greek lines on an ivory ground. The upper header looks like an almost erased pinkish nebula, while the brown ink forms a uniform sky of signs. What fascinates me is the contrast between the vastness of time — the work comes from Byzantium, around 1000 to 1100 — and the human precision of each stroke. This folio 87 shows no stars or peacocks, but its wide empty margins remind me of the space around celestial bodies, full of quiet anticipation.

It looks like someone's giant notebook where they wrote a lot without leaving spaces. The page is cookie-colored with darker edges, as if many hands have touched it. Everything is written in tiny scribbles I do not understand because they are in Greek, packed tightly in the center. At the top there is a pinkish smudge you can barely see. On the left another page peeks out and on the right you can tell the book is very chubby, with many leaves stacked together. I like finding the little number 87 in the corner.

Look at the top, near the ivory edge, for a two-digit number.
