What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is photographed from above against a dark gray background, filling nearly the whole frame. Only the right-hand page is fully visible, folio 93 recto; at the left appears a narrow strip of the preceding page and the stitched spine. The leaf is vellum in a yellowed ivory tone, with darkened, wavy, slightly worn edges. Fine wrinkles, folds, and an uneven surface are visible toward the bottom, along with small spots and dark specks scattered across the sheet. The handwritten Greek text covers the upper and central portions in dense, regular lines of brown ink. The first lines stand out through larger lettering and faded reddish and gold ink, especially in the heading and in a large initial at the left. Below, the script becomes smaller and tighter, with abbreviations and marginal marks. Elongated brown stains, like scorching or damp damage, appear in the margins and partly frame the text, recurring beside some initials. At the upper right, the number “93” is written in pencil in a modern hand. Soft, even light reveals the porous texture of the parchment and the thickness of the page block along the right edge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the heading and the large initial, where color still guides the eye, then follow the shift toward the smaller, denser script below. Look next at the brown stains in the margins: they are not decoration, but traces of time that now frame the text. Finally, notice the wide blank lower half, which gives the page its quiet breathing space.

ContextContexto

This is folio 93, recto, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with Greek text, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, and its author is unknown. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the soul's immortality, and fountains of life and salvation. This particular page is mostly text, so its decoration is restrained compared with those openings. The exact scribe is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this page looks almost entirely textual, the same volume opens each Gospel with illuminated borders featuring peacocks, understood in the source as symbols of the immortality of the soul.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the reading of a sacred text change when color appears only at the beginning and then gives way to dense, plain script?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de un texto sagrado cuando el color aparece solo al principio y luego da paso a una escritura densa y austera?
  2. What can the stains, wrinkles, and later numbering tell us about the life of this book over nine centuries?¿Qué pueden contarnos las manchas, las arrugas y la numeración posterior sobre la vida de este libro a lo largo de nueve siglos?
  3. Why include peacocks and fountains at the openings of the Gospels, and how does that imagery shape what is read afterward?¿Por qué incluir pavos reales y fuentes en las aperturas de los evangelios, y cómo influye esa imagen en lo que se lee después?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely with me, you will see this ivory vellum leaf is not smooth, its edges are wavy and worn, with fine wrinkles at the bottom and tiny dark spots from age. The main brown ink sits firmly, but at the top there are larger letters in faded red with traces of gold that have lost their shine. I notice those elongated brown stains in the margins, they look like old damp or burn marks, and the number 93 in pencil that a modern hand added at the top right.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this folio 93 feels like a night sky. Against the dark gray background of the support, the thick block of the book looks like a pale planet and the vellum page is its lit surface. The heading in faded red and gold ink is like a brighter constellation, while the dense Greek text below is stars lined up in perfect rows. The brown stains and the porous parchment remind me of craters and traces of time, marks from a thousand-year journey from Byzantium to today.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old wizard book. It is open and you can only see one yellowish page well with strange letters I do not understand because they are in Greek. At the top there are bigger letters in red and a little shiny gold, and on the side a giant letter as if a spell is starting. The edges are wrinkly and stained like coffee, as if someone used it a lot. At the top right someone wrote 93 in pencil, like when I mark my homework.

What number written in pencil with a modern stroke appears at the top right of the visible page?

    HintPista

Look at the upper right corner of the ivory leaf, it is a light handwritten mark.

  2. #2

Besides the main brown ink, what other two colors can be seen in the larger letters of the heading?

    HintPista

Look at the first lines at the top, they are larger letters that look faded and a bit shiny.

  3. #3

How many full pages of the book are clearly seen in the photo?

    HintPista

Notice that on the left you only see a narrow strip and the sewn spine, the one fully visible is on the right.
