What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open book photographed from above against a dark gray background, with the right-hand page-folio 104 recto-filling almost the entire frame. At the left, only the edge of the preceding page is visible, cut off by the frame. The vellum is aged ivory, slightly wavy, with faint stains, irregular edges, and a matte surface; along the right side, the thickness of the volume can be seen in the stacked leaves in ocher tones. The handwritten Greek text occupies the upper and central part of the page, leaving wide empty margins. At the top are about eight lines in large, well-spaced letters in reddish and ocher ink; below them, a dense block of much smaller, tightly packed writing in dark brown extends for roughly twenty-five lines. Some initials stand out in red, especially one near the lower left corner of the block. Small dark perforations or burn-like marks appear beside the text, purple dots sit near the right edge, and at the upper right the number '104' is written in pale pencil or ink. There are no visible figures or ornaments: attention falls on the rhythm of the calligraphy and the worn parchment surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two sizes of script and notice how the page distinguishes main text from commentary without images. Then look at the wide blank margins and the small holes beside the text block. That contrast between orderly writing and worn material changes the reading: the book is not only a message, but also a physical object that has survived.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this page belongs to a Gospel Book with Commentaries made around 1000-1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, judging by its level of sophistication. Now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks-symbol of the immortality of the soul-and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. Folio 104, by contrast, is a text page without miniatures. The scribe is not known.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what others overlook: the aged ivory vellum, wavy, stained, with irregular edges. I see the contrast between the eight upper lines in reddish and ochre ink, spacious and airy, and the lower block of about twenty-five lines in dark brown, tight and tiny. I notice those dark perforations in the margins and the purplish dots on the right edge. It is a witness to a thousand years of monastic use and careful preservation.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page as a miniature night sky. At the top, a few large reddish stars float apart like title constellations. Below, a dense Milky Way of dark brown letters crowds into twenty-five tight lines. The wide empty margins are the void that makes the text shine. It reminds me of the silence of a Byzantine scriptorium around the year 1000, copying without images, with only rhythm and light guiding the hand.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone's giant notebook where they wrote a whole lot. At the top there are big reddish letters, like a title made with marker. Down below everything is full of tiny brown letters huddled together, like ants in line! I like that the page is the color of an old cookie, a little wrinkly and spotty, and on the side you can see lots of ochre stacked pages. No pictures, just letters.
