What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open bound volume, seen from slightly above against a flat grey background, with one vellum page occupying almost the whole frame. The sheet is a warm cream colour, with irregular, lightly darkened edges, small stains and soft undulations that reveal its age and flexible material. On the left, the thickness of the book is visible in numerous stacked leaves, held by a vertical transparent strap that crosses the page near the inner margin. The text, in Greek, forms a compact block in the upper and central area, written in brown ink with small, regular, closely spaced handwriting. Some passages stand out in reddish ink: two lines at the top and a larger, more spacious block at the bottom, where the letters are bolder and more widely separated. A brownish stain interrupts the margin beside the upper text, and another touches an initial in the lower passage. The lower half of the page is generously blank, with faint marks and shadows. The lighting is even and diffuse, with a soft undulating shadow on the left, emphasising the texture of the vellum and the relief of the bound edge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the wide, empty margins and let the dense block of text emerge as an object, not just as writing. Then move from the faded upper lines to the bolder red passage at the bottom and notice how colour organises reading. Finally, look at the stains, the cockled edge and the transparent strap: they recall that this sheet has been handled and preserved for centuries.

ContextContexto

This is folio 126 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author between about 1000 and 1100 in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume contains 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the immortality of the soul, and fountains alluding to the fountain of life. That decoration does not appear on this text page.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual observation: although the technique of the volume includes gold and tempera, on this folio there is almost no ornament; the work is entrusted to the contrast between brown ink and red ink on the pale vellum.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on this warm cream vellum, with its irregular edges, brownish spots, and gentle ripples. Each wrinkle shows how the material has breathed for centuries. I see two inks: brown for the compact upper block and reddish for the highlighted lines and the thicker, airier passage below. The transparent strap holding the page near the spine reminds me of our invisible work: to protect without interrupting. It is a humble folio, without gold or peacocks, yet perfect to contemplate the scribe’s craft.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This page makes me think of constellations. The Greek text forms a dense block like a star cluster in the upper area, while the lower half stays blank like a clear night sky. The two lines in reddish ink at the top and the more spaced lower block are like guide stars marking the reading path. Seen from above on a gray background, the book looks like a portable observatory where the scribe ordered chaos into neat, tight lines so the reader would not get lost.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and big book open on a gray table. The page is cookie cream colored and you can see many little pages stacked on the left. There are tiny brown letters all close together and others in red that are bigger and more spaced out below. I like that the bottom part is empty, as if someone left space to draw. There is a clear little strap holding the page and some brown spots that look like chocolate. It feels calm and quiet.
