What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open book photographed from above against a very dark, almost black gray background. It fills nearly the whole frame, and we mainly see the right-hand page, marked 138 at the top; on the left only the edge of the preceding page is visible, and on the right, the layered thickness of many leaves. The support is vellum in a yellowish cream tone, with irregular edges, darkened corners, and a slightly wavy surface. The upper half is covered with small, dense, regular Greek writing traced in brown ink in closely packed lines. Below, the text changes: the lettering is larger, more widely spaced, and easier to make out, beginning with a prominent initial K on the left. Near the top there is also a short heading and small signs, as if they were reference marks for a reader or commentator. Looked at slowly, the page reveals traces of time and use: a pointed tear in the right edge, fine creases and wrinkles crossing the lower area, pale and dark stains, tiny holes, and a mark near the lower initial. The light is soft and even, without strong reflections; it brings out the fibrous texture of the parchment and shows the ink, faded in places, shifting between reddish brown and dark sepia.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the two blocks of writing: the dense small script above and the larger, airier script below. Then look at the right edge and the lower folds, where the damage reveals that this is a physical object, not just a text. That tension between reading and touching helps explain its age.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 138 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made probably between 1000 and 1100 in Byzantium, in Constantinople. The complete volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, in a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with a page framed by richly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—chiefly peacocks, symbols of the soul’s immortality—and fountains, images of life and salvation. This page, by contrast, is mostly text. Because of its refinement, it was probably made in a monastery in Constantinople; the author or scribe is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this folio is almost entirely writing, the book it belongs to contains 428 leaves—a reminder of the enormous labor required to copy and comment on the four Gospels by hand.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the shift from small, dense writing to larger writing tell us about the relationship between the Gospel text and its commentary?¿Qué puede decirnos el paso de una letra pequeña y densa a una más grande sobre la relación entre el texto evangélico y su comentario?
  2. How does knowing that this book has 428 handmade leaves change the way you value a single page?¿Cómo cambia el valor de una sola página saber que el libro tiene 428 hojas hechas a mano?
  3. What stories can the tears, wrinkles, and stains tell that the written words cannot?¿Qué historias cuentan las rasgaduras, las arrugas y las manchas que las palabras no cuentan?

What holds my attention here is the skin of the book. This creamy yellowish vellum is no longer smooth: it shows ripples, fine creases at the bottom and that jagged tear on the right edge. The brown ink, somewhere between reddish and sepia, is faded in places, with light and dark stains and tiny holes that speak of centuries of use. At the top the Greek script is tiny and dense, below it is larger and airier with an initial K. It is fragile handwork that has survived a thousand years.

To me this page is like a night sky. At the top, that tiny dense Greek script looks like a crowded constellation of stars, with small annotations like reference marks so the reader does not get lost. Below, the larger, more spaced text is like a moon that makes reading clearer, with the initial K as an orientation point. Photographed from above on a dark background, the open book recalls an old map. It makes me think of the patient hand-copying craft in Byzantium between 1000 and 1100, searching for clarity within immensity.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very very old book that someone used a lot. It is open to page 138 and it looks yellowish, a little wrinkly and even with a small tear on the edge as if it got nibbled. At the top there are tiny letters very close together and at the bottom bigger letters that start with a big K. There are little stains and tiny holes and everything looks wavy. I imagine someone in a monastery writing with brown ink without lifting the hand, and that this book traveled a long time to get here so we can see it.
