What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is photographed from above against a dark gray background, with the left-hand page occupying almost the whole frame and only a narrow strip of the right-hand page visible at the edge. The support is vellum in a warm cream tone, with slightly irregular, wavy edges, small brown and faint pink stains, darker spots near the margins, and a softly undulating surface that catches gentle shadows. On the right, the thickness of the gathered leaves and the binding structure can be seen, with frayed threads and worn material. The page holds two distinct blocks of handwritten Greek. The upper block, with larger, more spacious minuscule script in reddish-brown ink, begins with a prominent capital letter projecting slightly to the left. Above it runs a smaller, tighter passage. Below, after a generous blank space, a second block in smaller, denser script begins, preceded by a decorative initial set into the left margin. Very faint ruled lines organize the writing. The ink varies from dark brown to rusty red, the strokes are fluid and slanted, and abbreviations crowd the line endings. No figures or bright illumination dominate here: the visual effect comes from the rhythm of the script, the breathing margins, and the aged texture of the skin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large initial in the upper block and follow the lines of Greek as a drawn pattern, even if you cannot read them. Then compare the two sizes of script and notice the breathing space left between them. That contrast changes the page from a simple text into a layered tool for study.

ContextContexto

This is folio 141, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made in Byzantium around 1000–1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The author is unknown. The bound volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, written in ink with tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the immortality of the soul, and fountains evoking the fountain of life and salvation. This particular folio, however, is mainly a dense text page, not one of those decorated openings.

Curious detailDato curioso

The complete volume has 428 leaves, so this quiet, mostly undecorated page belongs to a very large handwritten book made long before printing.

What moves me most is the skin itself, that warm creamy vellum that gently warps and breathes. I see the irregular edges, the soft brown and pinkish stains, the darker speckles and the frayed threads along the spine. The writing is not single: on top a larger, spaced script with its initial jutting into the margin, and below a denser, smaller block separated by white space, all held by faint ruled lines.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this page is like a sky with constellations of ink. There are two blocks of Greek writing in reddish brown and rust, one large and airy on top and one compact below, with a decorative initial in the margin. I love the rhythm and the empty space between them, like separate orbits. There are no bright figures here, just the patient order of a monastery in Constantinople around the year 1000.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks old and wrinkly like a forgotten tortilla, creamy colored with little spots. It is open and you can see one page well, the other one almost hides. On top there are big spaced letters and below many tiny letters together, all in brown. On top there is also a bigger letter that sticks out. I like that it has a lot of white space in the middle, like to breathe, and that it has no shiny drawings.
