What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a thick open book photographed from above against a plain, dark grey background. The left-hand page, the verso of folio 145, fills almost the entire frame, while only a narrow strip of the next page is visible at right. At left, the curved spine and the stacked edges of many slightly wavy leaves can be seen in cream and ochre tones. The page is pale, yellowed vellum handwritten in Greek in brown, sepia-like ink. There are two clearly distinct blocks: above, the main text in larger, more generously spaced letters, opened by a larger initial in a reddish tone; below, a dense block of smaller, tighter writing, also with a prominent initial projecting into the left margin. A line of tiny script runs across the top, like a heading or note. The light is even and soft, without hard shadows, revealing a matte, slightly irregular surface with small stains, dark specks, and violet marks scattered near the edges, especially at upper left and right. A semi-transparent vertical band, probably for support or repair, crosses the left margin. No figures or gilding are visible on this page: the effect is one of austerity, calligraphic rhythm, and wear accumulated over time.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the contrast between the two blocks of writing and notice how size itself signals hierarchy. Then move to the enlarged initials in the left margin and to the line of small script at the top. Finally, look closely at the spots and the translucent strip along the edge: the signs of age are part of the object's story, not a distraction from it.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 145 verso of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium around 1000–1100 by an unknown maker, in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek. The museum notes that each of the four Gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—principally peacocks—and fountains. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople, although that origin is not certain. Unlike the opening pages, this folio is devoted almost entirely to written text.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the illuminated openings described by the museum, the peacocks symbolize the immortality of the soul, and the fountains represent the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul.

The conservatorLa restauradora

What holds me here is the yellowish vellum and its traces of time. I see two blocks of Greek writing in sepia ink, larger and airy letters on top and a dense, tight commentary below, both with reddish initials setting the rhythm. I love the small violet stains near the edges and the semi-transparent strip on the left margin, which supports and protects without hiding. The curved spine and wavy cream pages speak of a thick volume of 428 folios that has survived almost a thousand years through quiet, careful handling.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page as if it were a sky with two constellations. On top, the main text shines with broad, spaced letters like brighter stars, headed by a reddish initial. Below, the commentary is a dense Milky Way of tiny, continuous strokes. The fine line at the top feels like a horizon guiding the reading. With no gold or figures here, the austerity reminds me of the dark space of the gray background around the book, where even light reveals every stain and ripple of the parchment with clarity.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks super old and chubby, with lots of cream-colored little pages piled up and a curved spine like a belly. The page is full of tiny Greek letters I cannot read, some big on top and many small below, all in brown ink. There are two bigger reddish letters that seem to say something important starts here. I like the little purple spots on the edges and the transparent strip on the left side, as if someone put a bandage on it to take care of it.
