What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows an open book seen from above and slightly from the front, resting on a dark gray surface. It fills almost the entire frame, and we see mainly the left-hand page—folio 147 verso—while only a narrow strip of the right-hand page is visible. The support is vellum in an aged ivory tone, with uneven edges, brown and pinkish stains, small dark spots, and areas where damp or handling has left translucent halos. The text, handwritten in Greek in reddish-brown ink, is arranged in two blocks. The upper one has larger, bolder, more widely spaced letters with rounded strokes; the lower one is denser, smaller, and tighter, with long lines and a slanted, flowing hand. Between them sits a short line that acts as a transition. At the start of the lower block, a large initial in the form of an open circle stands out, only lightly decorated. There are no figurative illustrations on this page: the writing itself takes center stage. One can make out the faint ruling guides, creases and wrinkles near the spine, the soft shadow of the accumulated leaves at the left, and even light that reveals the fibrous texture of the prepared skin, almost translucent at the edges.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, notice the contrast between the two blocks of writing: their different sizes and rhythms already organize the reading. Then move closer to the large initial at the lower left and to the faint ruling lines that guided the scribe. Finally, look at the edges and stains; that wear changes the page from a simple text into a physical object with a thousand-year history.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this page comes from a Gospel book with commentaries, by an unknown author, dated to about 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, probably to a monastery in Constantinople. The complete volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds—principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. This unillustrated text page shows the everyday, reading side of that luxurious whole. The scribe and the illuminator are not known.

I focus on the aged ivory vellum, with its uneven edges and brown and pinkish stains that tell a thousand years of life. I see halos left by humidity, wrinkles near the spine and that fibrous texture almost translucent at the edges. At the top the reddish brown ink forms large rounded letters, below it becomes small and dense, with a circular initial marking the transition. No gold here, just the daily work of the scribe and the patience of the monastery.

Like someone watching the sky, I look at this page and see constellations of text. Above a few large spaced stars, below a dense milky way of tight slanted lines. The vellum is like an old moon, ivory with craters of dark spots and translucent seas. There are no figures or peacocks here, just writing, but I imagine this folio 147 verso was a quiet stop between illuminated pages full of light.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a very old open book taking up almost the whole picture. The page is creamy with little brown spots and looks wrinkly, especially near the spine where it folds. At the top the letters are big and spaced out, below they are tiny and crowded like when I write a lot and get tired. There is a bigger round letter at the start. It has no drawings, just many little letters in another language I do not understand.
