What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, a single parchment folio photographed at a slight angle fills almost the entire frame. The folio is open as part of a thick bound volume, with the spine on the left and the right fore-edge revealing the mass of hundreds of stacked leaves with yellowed, wavy edges. The parchment surface is irregular, creamy and stained by age, with gentle wrinkles, soft undulations and tidemarks of damp. Near the top there is a long horizontal stain in pinkish, violet and greenish tones with ochre halos, probably pigment transferred from an adjacent illuminated page. The text occupies the centre in a dense single column of small Greek minuscule in brown ink, ruled in straight, even lines, with no illustration on this side. Tiny marginal notes and a handwritten foliation appear at the upper right. Diffuse overhead light reveals the granular texture of the vellum, the faint sheen of the ink and subtle shadows along the gutter and the edge. The background is dark and neutral, without distraction.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the colored shadow at the top and then move slowly down through the tight lines of brown script. Notice how the wrinkled, stained parchment tells a story of time as much as the text does, and how the plainness of this folio contrasts with the rich illumination described for the opening of each gospel.

ContextContexto

This recto folio 148 belongs to a Gospel Book with Commentaries of 428 leaves with Greek texts, dated ca. 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Each of the four gospels opens on a brilliantly illuminated page showing the evangelist portrait, peacocks as symbols of immortality and fountains as symbols of the fountain of life. Although this particular page shows only text, it is part of the same volume made in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with leather binding. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The artist and scribe remain unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

The complete volume holds 428 leaves in Greek, and while this folio is text-only, other pages in the same book have gold and tempera borders so rich that their pigment has offset onto neighboring pages, as the colored blur at the top suggests.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at what the parchment tells us without words. This creamy vellum, wrinkled and marked by humidity stains, holds more than nine hundred years of history. At the top you can see that pinkish and greenish smudge, pigment that migrated from another illuminated page, like a ghost of color. The brown ink in tiny Greek minuscule is steady and even, but the support itself feels alive and wavy. For me, every fold and every yellowed edge along the fore-edge reminds us that conservation means listening to the material breathe.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page like a night sky copied by hand. The Greek text forms a single dense and orderly column, like constellations aligned with a ruler. There are no portraits or peacocks here, those open each of the four Gospels, but this sober leaf holds together the whole system of 428 folios. The small numbering at the top right reminds me of cataloging stars. Even that patch of color on top looks like a pale nebula that drifted in from another galaxy, from another gilded page that is now closed.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks super old and wrinkly, like a grandpa's skin. It is full of tiny brown letters all squeezed together that I cannot read because they are in Greek. At the top there is a little pink and green stain, it looks like a pretty picture lost its color there. I like looking at the side of the book, you can see lots and lots of pages stacked like a giant sandwich. I imagine monks wrote it a very long time ago in a monastery and their hands hurt from writing so much.

  2. #2

At the top of this page with no pictures, what colored stain can you see that came from another leaf?

    HintPista

Look at the upper area of the parchment, above the Greek text.
