What you would seeLo que verías

An open book is seen from above, slightly angled, against a dark gray background. The fully visible page, on the left, is a cream, uneven sheet of vellum with wavy edges, spots and signs of age. In the upper left corner there is a cluster of small purplish stains, and a vertical translucent strip protects or covers part of the inner margin. The text, handwritten in Greek, fills most of the page in inks ranging from dark brown to reddish tones. Two writing sizes are distinguished: a block of larger, more spacious letters in the center, and a denser, smaller hand above and below. In the left margin, two enlarged initials, in red and ocher, mark beginnings; each is surrounded by a diffuse brown halo, like a burn or stain. At the top, a faded heading can barely be read. On the far left, the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible, with tan and golden edges. On the right, only a narrow slice of the facing page appears. The light is soft, creates gentle shadows over the slight undulation of the parchment and reveals its matte, fibrous texture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the contrast between the large central letters and the small script that surrounds them, like a main voice encircled by comments. Then look at the enlarged initials in the left margin and the dark halos around them. Those marks shift the reading: this is not a flawless reproduction, but an object handled, aged and preserved over centuries.

ContextContexto

This is folio 150, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries made in Byzantium, probably in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, by an unknown author. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks —symbols of the soul's immortality— and fountains, associated with the fountain of life and salvation. Its refinement suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. This particular page is mostly text, without a large miniature.

Curious detailDato curioso

The visual hierarchy is also an intellectual one: the Gospel passage stands out in larger writing, while the commentary occupies smaller script above and below, so the page organizes reading before a single word is understood.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the difference in size between the Gospel text and the commentary change the way we imagine its reading?¿Cómo cambia la diferencia de tamaño entre el texto evangélico y el comentario la forma en que imaginamos su lectura?
  2. What can the stains, halos and repairs tell us about the life of this book over nine centuries?¿Qué pueden contarnos las manchas, los halos y las reparaciones sobre la vida de este libro a lo largo de nueve siglos?
  3. What is lost and what is gained when a manuscript like this is viewed as a digital image rather than held in one's hands?¿Qué se pierde y qué se gana cuando un manuscrito como este se contempla como imagen digital y no entre las manos?

If you look closely you will see this cream vellum is not flat, it is wavy and alive, with stains, irregular edges and that vertical translucent guard near the gutter protecting the binding. I focus on the inks, from dark brown to reddish tones, and the two sizes of Greek script, the larger one in the center and the smaller dense commentary. Those enlarged initials in red and ochre on the left margin have a diffuse brown halo that looks like a burn, a memory of time on the parchment.

This folio 150 verso reminds me of a mapped sky. The central block of larger letters is like a main constellation and the small script surrounding it is like commentary stars orbiting around it. Imagine Byzantium around the year 1000, monks copying by dim light as if tracing maps of the universe. Although there is no large miniature here, that order between center and periphery reveals a cosmology, an attempt to place the sacred message at the center and let explanations gravitate around it.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very very old book someone left open so it can breathe. Its page is cookie colored with tiny purplish stains on top and wobbly edges as if cut by hand. I see lots of little letters in another language I do not understand and two big letters in red and yellow on the left. I like the thickness of the big book peeking out on the side, it is so many pages pressed together with a golden and beige edge.
