What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open page from an ancient manuscript, viewed from a slight overhead angle and filling most of the frame. The support is vellum in yellowed ivory and pale cream, with wrinkles, creases, foxing and water stains, and darkened, worn edges; the upper right corner is folded inward. Across the surface runs dense calligraphy in reddish-brown ink, in Greek, arranged in continuous horizontal lines from margin to margin. Near the top, a smaller, centered heading, slightly faded, precedes the main block of text. On the left and right margins two ornamental initials are subtly highlighted with an orange-brown halo, marking the start of new paragraphs. Very faint ruling lines are visible beneath the script, along with isolated dark spots in the margins and a modern pencil foliation, 153, in the upper right corner. The lighting is soft and even, revealing the fibrous texture of the vellum, the matte sheen of the ink, and the leather-bound spine on the right, with the thickness of the stacked leaves clearly visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dense script and how the brown ink stands out against the aged vellum. Then look for the two highlighted initials in the margins and the small heading at the top that structure the reading. Finally notice the material traces —folds, stains and the turned corner— that reveal the object’s age.

ContextContexto

This page is folio 153 recto from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, dated about 1000 to 1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the full volume comprises 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. Each of the four gospels opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author together with birds —chiefly peacocks, symbols of immortality— and fountains representing the fountain of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably made in a monastery in Constantinople. The scribe and illuminator are not known. This particular leaf is a continuous text page, without the figurative illumination found on the opening pages.

Curious detailDato curioso

While this leaf shows only text, the manuscript it belongs to retains four richly illuminated opening pages with gold, evangelist portraits, peacocks and fountains, symbolic motifs of eternal life in Byzantine art.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see what moves me: the yellowish ivory parchment with wrinkles, humidity stains and darkened worn edges. The reddish brown ink still holds firm on the fibrous texture, although the centered header at the top is faded. I worry about the folded corner at the upper right and the fragile ruling lines underneath. Every mark tells how this book survived a thousand years and how we must care for it for the next ones.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page and think about time. It has no painted stars like other illuminated openings in this book, but it is a record of human time: brown ink on cream parchment that has traveled from Byzantium for about a thousand years. It is like observing a distant galaxy, its light reaches us late. Here the soft even light reveals the opaque texture and lets us read a continuous Greek script, like a constellation of signs crossing from margin to margin without interruption.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant homework with no pictures. The whole sheet is full of little brown letters in straight rows from one side to the other. The paper looks very old, wrinkly and with little spots, like a grandma's book page. On the right edge there is a tiny folded corner, like when you mark where you stopped. There are only two slightly more orange letters at the start of some lines so you do not get lost.

Look at the upper right corner of the folio: what number written in pencil marks this page?

    HintPista

It is a three-digit number starting with 15 right where the corner is folded.

  2. #2

In the left and right margins there are special slightly more orange letters that start paragraphs: how many are there?

    HintPista

Count the orange-brown highlights in the margins, one on each side.

  3. #3

The support of this page is not modern white paper but an animal material in a light tone: what ivory color is the parchment described as?

    HintPista

Think of a very light beige, almost like cream, with a color code starting with EDE.
